I was mainly into sports game when I played....but here are some of the games I played.....
Pursue The Pennant (Now Diamond Mind baseball I think) Car Wars Status Pro Football/Basketball APBA Baseball Strato-matic Basketball Stratomatic Baseball Title Bout (Been getting the itch to get this stuff out again.) D&D Blood Bowl Superstar Wrestling Champions of the Galaxy Legends of Wrestling D&D
There were 2 other games my neighbor had that I didnt own that we would play. One was a horse racing game, and one was a auto racing game. I think they were both made by the same company that made Title Bout (Avalon games?). I thought they were both fun....but I really only played them with him, so I always just used his game.

How do you play Car Wars? I've always heard of it but never come across it. It was basically done on a gridded map, depending on a number of factors would determine your cars armor, speed, etc. We always played it in one of 3 ways. We would have "race" mode where we would set up long stretches of track (Point A to point B, not in a lap format). Would basically have to have similar type cars, and use AI cars, some races we would do clean but the AI cars we had react to what we were doing. If someone pulled out weapons or was playing dirty the AI cars would act accordingly. Developed standard AI characters that would show up and race, and there were certain guys that would initiate foul play. The second way we would play is we would set up a "city" type atmosphere with buildings and alleys and such and just have a fight to finish, using weapons and such, last car standing won. Last way kind tied into the other 2 ways. We would run a story mode. Basically it normally was teams would show up at a city to do one of the races or city battles, and a lot of the time the results of the races/battles would determine what happened. Like we would go into a city for a race and won, and a drug lord had a lot of money we cost them by beating them, so our characters would have to get out of town in a hurry. Would basically have to get to point B before they caught up to you. Then on the way to other towns for races/battles, things would happen. Either we would instigate it by doing something to an AI vehicle or every once in awhile the AI would instigate it. Only the guy running the game actually knew how strong the AI cars were until the battle started. So sometimes after things start you wished you left that guy alone. Overall we had a lot of fun with that game. My one friend that ran the story mode was our "rules" expert. The one side to Car Wars that I didn't like was the manual set ups. They really were shit, and I have heard they really didnt get any better. They didn't really have their rules categorized too well, so you would be looking all over the manuals trying to find rules that should be grouped together. And it was one of those games that had so many rules, you had to refer to the manual just to make sure a lot more often then you should have. But we did have a lot of fun with it. I talked to my one friend a couple years ago, said he still plays with a different group of guys. Said has been playing for 20 years and still has to look at the manual quite a bit during gaming sessions....if that tells you anything about the complexity of certain aspects of the game.

Car Wars looks like a board game version of Twisted Metal, and that makes it interesting to me.

I remember playing Boothill, Top Secret, Star Frontiers,Gangbusters and The Marvel Super Heroes games. The Marvel Super Heroes game was ok but the system sucked. Which MSH game? No the original version that came out in 1984, then had an advanced box set in 1986 or so? It's a great system. The next two versions, SAGA with the cards instead of dice might be ok. The last one used "stones" and no dice again, that one was bad.

I enjoyed the SAGA system. You could whip up a character in 5 minutes if you wanted to.
At least it wasn't Champions which you need a physics degree to be able to piece together a character in that game.

Car Wars overall is a pretty cool game to play.......There is just a large learning curve compared to other games that I have played. The vehicles are incredibly detailed with almost anything on the vehicle having "hit points" to be damaged or blown off.

I thought that game was too simplistic and like Mad Dog said the Champions game was way too complicated. The one I liked the best was Heroes Unlimited www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=H500This game seemed to hit the mark as far as super hero games

You should try Mutants and Masterminds for superheroes. It really simulates the battles well. You can actually one shot the baddies if they fail a toughness save and it's all point buy.
I read the Champions book once. It was not a pleasant experience. I honestly don't know how people play that game. And this is coming from a guy that somehow made the Shadowrun 2nd and 3rd edition combat rules make sense.
