I bought Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters #1 on a whim today. I paid $3.99 for a book that literally took me 2 minutes to read. Fuck, IDW. Welcome to why I gave up on Bendis's Avengers! Heyooooo!

Yeah, IDW is big on splash pages... that combined with the fact they don't distribute their trades well is why I don't get much of their stuff, even though alot of it is very intriguing.

Read Godzilla KOM #1 last night. 2 major problems for me:
1. Japan drops a nuclear bomb on Godzilla. Japan. Nuclear Bomb. *facepalm* Japan has the Three Nonproliferation Principles, which state that they will not make, posesses, or allow nuclear weapons. This is one of their guiding tenents since the end of WW2. Watch Godzilla 1985 if you want a lesson on this one, people.
2. Barack F'n Obama. Bad enough I have to deal with this guy in real life, I don't need him in my comic books too.
I did, however, really dig the art. Phil Hester is an offbeat choice for Goji but he works.
IDW is facing an uphill battle as far as I am concerned.

I was right there with you on Obama. I lean much more to the right politically but I didn't want to go into it here. I was also really annoyed at how quick Japan was to just drop a nuke on Godzilla.
It was really disappointing. I saw it and got really excited for it and then it took 2 minutes to read, the author threw in his politcal views and the story didn't really make sense. Plus, Obama got the most screen time, where are the fucking characters?
I actually wrote IDW a fairly nasty email about that issue.
I enjoyed the Marvel Godzilla for all it's flaws. Namely they didn't get the license to any other of the monsters.

See though, I've never felt ripped off by any of the Transformers issues I've bought. Though it's funny. I feel like Transformers can get by without the human element and IDW spends too much time on them and you get Godzilla where you need the human element and IDW didn't develop anyone in the first issue.

Keeping on the IDW thread, I read volume 1 of GI Joe: A Real American Hero over the weekend. This title is written by Larry Hama and picks up immediately after the end of the Marvel series (even keeping the numbering). After the GI Joe team is mothballed, Cobra stages a fake terrorist attack by an ultra radical right wing seperatist group. In the wake of the planned failed attack, Cobra Commander activates a large number of sleeper CGs in Washington DC and enters a secret agreement with the Jugglers to get Cobra -- through all of their corporate subsidiaries -- to be the primary defense contractor for the United States as well as having the remnants of the GI Joe team declared to be outlaws.
This book is AWESOME. Larry Hama created the GI Joe team and he knows how to write them better than anyone. Same goes with Cobra Command. The story is fast paced and exciting, with lots of great gunplay. The finale is a multi-issue siege of the Silent Castle and is pitch perfect.
Cons: You need to know your old school Joe continuity, especially in regards to the Brain Wave Scanner. There's a good deal of Hama's (left wing) politics in this book, as well, which can be a distraction.
I'm very much looking forward to the next volume of this one!
EDIT: Also this volume made me want to get a Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow toy for the first time. Both are badass in this volume, especially Snake Eyes.

On the original Joe comics. Dr. Venom was a million times better than Dr. Mindbender.

On the original Joe comics. Dr. Venom was a million times better than Dr. Mindbender. I disagree. While I like Dr. Venom, Dr. Mindbender was cooler. Besides the fact that he used to be a dentist before driving himself insane, Mindbender also created the BATs, which are super cool. Although, despite being dead for many years, Dr. Venom plays a big role in this story...

Just read a couple trades....
Conan: Song of the Dead was really good... classic Conan stuff. Tim Truman's art is really good for the most part (he has some trouble with facial differential... some of the bad guys look like Conan's cousins) but otherwise was really good (especially the backgrounds). I'd definitely recommend it.
On the other side is Dark X-Men. Really terrible mini-series, that had little to do with the most excellent X-Men stuff of the last couple years. Unless you're somehow a huge fan of Nate Grey, very skippable.

I didn't care for Dark X-Men. Dark Avengers, I enjoyed that a lot.
I read Necrosha over the weekend. I'm not really sure how I felt about it honestly.

I'll probably get that and Utopia next time I order stuff... I can't say I'm that excited about it, but I like to read things in order, and I AM excited to get to Second Coming.

Necrosha isn't horrible. It had a better internal consistency than Blackest Night had. I felt the Black Lanterns varied wildly in power level and it was annoying. The Necrosha animates seem to be the same power level throughout.
It also leads into Second Coming which I've been told is awesome.

I got the ComiXology app for my Android phone. It's pretty cool. I might spend a few bucks here and there. Most of the comics are .99 cents or $1.99. I'm actually willing to pay that for comics.

I don't think I follow you on how the Black Lanterns were wildly inconsistant. Like most of the DC events which Geoff Johns has presided over, Blackest Night was very tight. Even to the point that as this was his test run for his new title of Chief Creative Officer, pretty much every crossover had to go through him, so even the little crossovers in the monthlies read well. At least, the ones I read did.
