Final Wrestle Kingdom Card!:
The card for Wrestle Kingdom in Tokyo Dome was announced today. My thoughts on the show below the card.
1/4/11 - "WRESTLE KINGDOM in Tokyo Dome" (WPW/G+/PPV/njpw.tv/iPPV); Tokyo Dome: 1.) Wrestle Kingdom Opening Match: Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, and Erick Stevens vs. Kensuke Sasaki, Takeshi Morishima, and Katsuhiko Nakajima 2.) IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship: Nick and Matt Jackson defend vs. Jushin Liger and Tiger Mask 3.) LUCHA LIBRE EXPOSE ~ Special Trios Match: Silver King (LLI), Negro Casas (LLI), and Felino (LLI) vs. Abismo Negro, Psicosis, and Electroshock 4.) IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Aerostar defends vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. 5.) Wrestle Kingdom Special Single Match: Kurt Angle (SMW) vs. Mike Awesome 6.) BLUE vs. RED ~ Special Tag Match: Jun Akiyama and Toshiaki Kawada vs. Mitsuharu Misawa (AJPW) and Yoshinari Ogawa (AJPW) 7.) MISSION START ~ Who is the Strongest?: Yuji Nagata and Shinya Hashimoto vs. Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba 8.) IWGP Tag Team Championship: Yoshihiro Takayama and Minoru Suzuki defend vs. Naomichi Marufuji and Go Shiozaki 9.) BRUTE FORCE ON DISPLAY ~ Wrestle Kingdom Special Tag Match: Bruiser Brody (AJPW) and Stan Hansen (AJPW) vs. Hawk Warrior and Animal Warrior 10.) IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Hiroshi Tanahashi defends vs. Shinjiro Otani 11.) THIS IS WRESTLE KINGDOM ~ Super Dream Match: Kenta Kobashi (AJPW) vs. Keiji Muto
The opening match is a pretty big statement to start the show. I think that WESTERN THUNDER vs. KENSUKE OFFICE has a ton of potential as a feud, but it seems like New Japan is still trying to figure out their whole faction wars right now.
Bucks vs. Liger and Tiger Mask has been hyped heavily over the past few months, and you could argue that it's one of the bigger matches on the show. This is the Bucks' first title defense, will they succeed? I can't see that happening.
Random Lucha trios match is random, but will probably be good. Yahoo Japan says it's one fall, whereas Superluchas (who will be covering the entire event!) says that it's dos de tres caidas. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.
Aerostar vs. Wagner will air on TV in Mexico, so it's a pretty internationally important match. The thing with this is, that Aerostar would be the third holder of the Jr. title to lose on their first match if he does indeed lose. Then again, if Wagner gets his hands on that Jr. title, I doubt he'll ever let it go.
Angle vs. Awesome is some sort of weird dream match. If they manage to incorporate some tables and chairs, I can't see any reason that this wouldn't be good.
NJPW vs. AJPW tag match is really AJPW vs. AJPW, which is funny to me. Misawa won't be willing to take the pinfall, not in the dome. Ogawa on the other hand, is likely going to get torn to pieces.
Musketeers vs. LEGEND is billed as one of the main events, and rightfully so. Hashimoto's on a roll, and Nagata could use the win. Inoki's win-loss record isn't exactly great, same with Baba. Baba's also still recuperating from an injury.
Takayama and Suzuki will face YOUNG GUN's Naomichi Marufuji and his partner, Go Shiozaki. This is actually Go's debut, so for him to win the titles here would be gigantic. Though..they ARE facing Takayama and Suzuki. This could be brutal.
Roadies vs. Brody and Hansen is a G1 Tag League Semifinals rematch. I'd expect this one ends clean, too, but you never know. One thing's for sure, there's gonna be a lot of bomb throwing.
Tanahashi's V3 defense is against Shinjiro Otani, who just competed in the Super J Cup, losing to Jushin Liger. Otani has been beaten by almost everyone he's fought, but he shows a lot of heart and determination. But the last time I checked, those attributes don't win you the title....or can they?
Main event speaks for itself. It's first time ever in a one on one match, and they're going to tear the house down. The question is, which old man will emerge victorious?

1/4/11 - "WRESTLE KINGDOM in Tokyo Dome" (WPW/G+/PPV/njpw.tv/iPPV); Tokyo Dome:
Report Credit: SuperLuchas, as well as Yahoo! Japan and Tokyo Sports. Lots of places covering this event.
Attendance: Roughly 26,000 paid.
1.) Wrestle Kingdom Opening Match: Kensuke Sasaki, Takeshi Morishima, and Katsuhiko Nakajima beat Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, and Erick Stevens (14:40) when Morishima used the Amaze Impact on Stevens. -- WESTERN THUNDER actually held their own against Kensuke Office. Castagnoli got a close 2 count on Nakajima with the Ricola Bomb early on. Kensuke chopped the bejeezus out of the entire other team, but it was Morishima's reverse chokeslam that did the gaijin team in.
2.) IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship: Jushin Liger and Tiger Mask beat Nick and Matt Jackson (9:56) when Tiger Mask used a Tiger suplex hold on Matt Jackson. -- Not a ton to say about this match. The Bucks got mauled for ten minutes. According to SuperLuchas, a fan in the crowd was screaming for the match to be stopped after a shotei from Liger, because Matt Jackson seemed legit knocked out.
As the champions were celebrating, Kotaro Suzuki and Ricky Marvin of YOUNG GUN attacked Liger and Tiger Mask. They took the microphone from the announcer and challenged Liger and Tiger Mask for the Jr. Tag Titles.
3.) LUCHA LIBRE EXPOSE ~ Special Trios Match: Silver King (LLI), Negro Casas (LLI), and Felino (LLI) beat Abismo Negro, Psicosis, and Electroshock (5:12) when Silver King used a moonsault on Psicosis. -- REALLY short match, but for what it was, it wasn't bad. I think that this could have gone longer.
4.) IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Dr. Wagner Jr. beat Aerostar (11:19) when Wagner used a Wagner driver to become the 4th champion. -- Alright, so Aerostar continues the trend of that title never being successfully defended. I was watching on iPPV, and my stream was mucked up for some of this, but what I saw was good. I'd like to clarify that the Wagner Driver that he won with was on the Dome ramp. Wagner rolled Aero in and pinned him to win the title.
5.) Wrestle Kingdom Special Single Match: Mike Awesome beat Kurt Angle (SMW) (15:30) when Awesome used an Awesome Bomb on Angle. -- I don't get how this match wasn't as good as I was hoping for. Awesome and Angle beat the crap out of each other, but it just wasn't fun to watch. There was only one table spot, and the table didn't break when Awesome was given an Angle slam onto it. Awesome won, the crowd was happy.
6.) BLUE vs. RED ~ Special Tag Match: Jun Akiyama and Toshiaki Kawada beat Mitsuharu Misawa (AJPW) and Yoshinari Ogawa (AJPW) (8:18) when Akiyama used Sternness Gust Gamma on Ogawa. -- Short match, Misawa and Kawada made up for it by beating the ever loving crap out of each other for most of the match. Akiyama challenged Tanahashi after the match. Kind of defeats the purpose of even having a title match if people mention Tanahashi, right?
7.) MISSION START ~ Who is the Strongest?: Yuji Nagata and Shinya Hashimoto beat Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba (9:55) when Hashimoto used a triangle choke on Inoki. -- Baba's injury was apparent here, and Hash and Nagata took advantage of it, despite Inoki being the loser in this match. Hashimoto made a statement, using the triangle choke to win. He then challenged Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, which got a HUGE reaction from the Tokyo Dome crowd.
8.) IWGP Tag Team Championship: Yoshihiro Takayama and Minoru Suzuki beat Naomichi Marufuji and Go Shiozaki (17:49) when Takayama used the Everest German suplex on Shiozaki. (1st defense)
9.) BRUTE FORCE ON DISPLAY ~ Wrestle Kingdom Special Tag Match: Bruiser Brody (AJPW) and Stan Hansen (AJPW) beat Hawk Warrior and Animal Warrior (12:50) when Brody used the King Kong Knee Drop on Hawk. -- As brutal, stiff, and hard hitting as any other match on the card. They made use of ring steps, tables, and chairs in this match. It was a flat-out war. Brody ended up pinning Hawk, and in the post-match conference, said he wants a shot at Takayama and Suzuki's tag belts.
10.) IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Hiroshi Tanahashi beat Shinjiro Otani (18:40) with the half-hatch suplex. (3rd defense) -- You didn't think Otani was REALLY going to win, did you? He put in an admirable effort here, but Tanahashi ended up winning. Otani got a good Spiral Bomb on Tanahashi, but Tanahashi got his foot on the rope. Tanahashi used the High Fly Flow and the Sling Blade, to no avail. It ended up being the half-hatch suplex that did Otani in. Great match.
11.) THIS IS WRESTLE KINGDOM ~ Super Dream Match: Keiji Muto beat Kenta Kobashi (AJPW) (32:18) with a moonsault. -- Probably the best match in NJPW to date. You had a molten hot crowd, and two of the biggest names ever going at it. Muto went right to work on the knees of Kobashi with dropkicks aplenty. Kobashi responded by chopping Muto over and over again to the point that my own chest was beginning to turn red. Muto hit the Shining Wizard, but Kobashi kicked out. Burning lariat from Kobashi, Muto kicked out. Moonsault from Kobashi, Muto moves and hits one of his own, and wins. The two shake hands, and the crowd goes home happy.

You can really tell you're enjoying playing the fed... makes the results all that much more interesting.
Giant Baba and Andre as a team will be sick! I'll be shocked if they lose even 1 match, really.

I mean, I'm sure teams like the Road Warriors could be beat them, but still they will be like a hot knife through butter. I'm hoping that when I get to the G1 Tag League, that they tear through it. Would be fun to see them against Takayama/Suzuki if they're still champions when it's all said and done.

Oh sure! There are a lot of tag teams that would match up well with them, but they will be tough. Brody & Hansen, Miracle Violence Connection, Road Warriors, Holy Demon Army, and Misawa & Kobashi would all be tough teams to face off with Baba & Andre
