Mike and I were talking about this in the context of the game as I"m going to start a Japan fed in a bit and said might look at it as not being in the NWA like my other feds. Then down the road could do champ vs. champ. He said have phantom or controversial title changes in Japan, and I said like Flair-Fujinami and he remembered Inoki-Backlund.
BOB BACKLUND VS. ANTONIO INOKI (3 dvds)
6/1/78 (WWWF and NWF titles, draw) 7/27/78 (WWWF title, draw) 12/14/78 (WWWF title, Inoki countout) 11/30/79 (WWWF title, Inoki pins Backlund) 12/6/79 (WWWF title, Backlund pins Inoki) 4/16/80 (WWWF title, Backlund by DQ) 8/22/80 (WWWF title, Inoki by countout)

Is that win now recognized? I've heard the E recognized the change now
another is the Race-Flair New Zealand switch which gives Race 8 title wins

I don't think I can come up with anymore then Inoki/Backlund......
Was this ever done in the tag ranks as well?

I think right now they do not. There's Thesz/Rogers that led to the formation of the WWWF. There were a couple of other NWA ones.

Was this ever done in the tag ranks as well? In a Blackjack Mulligan interview, he claimed when the Mid Atlantic plane crash happened, booker George Scott begged him to come in since the territory basically lost their three top heels. Mulligan agreed, but Vince Sr wouldn't let him leave, calling him crazy, especially since they were WWWF tag champs. Mulligan knew the only way to lose would to be to lose the titles. He intentionally pulled either Tony Parisi or Louis Cerdan on top of him, holding him then, letting him be pinned.

There was that stupid one during Backlund's reign where the referee handed Greg Valentine the title after he lost and that suddenly led to the belt being held up. That one still doesn't make sense to me.
The AWA was created by naming Pat O'Connor the AWA World Champion when he wasn't the company.
Bobo Brazil's NWA World Title reign isn't currently recognized due to him refusing the title and the NWA declaring him champ.
Killer Kowalski was recognized as the NWA World Champion by some states after Buddy Rogers broke his ankle in the first fall of a match they had in 1962.
There was Flair losing to Jack Veneno because Flair feared there'd be a riot if he lost.

That one still doesn't make sense to me. . Yeah, that's pretty dumb. The ref handed the wrong guy a belt, leading it to be held up!? Maybe Todd remembers since he was watching at the time The AWA was created by naming Pat O'Connor the AWA World Champion when he wasn't the company. The only thing is that O'Connor had some name value, which led to Verne's title win credibility. There was Flair losing to Jack Veneno because Flair feared there'd be a riot if he lost. I don't blame Flair one bit!!! This led to a title match, but the most stupid one leading to a title match is when they had (person not named) in the ring for a title contract signing against Triple H for Wrestlemania. Shawn Michaels came in and superkicked (person not named) and signed his name on the contract, thus making it legal. WTF kind of logic is that? You think any lawyer would allow that. Stupid

I hated that one too. He won the title and he was still an afterthought in all of that.
There was Lawler and the whole AWA/Memphis/WCCW title unification that led to AWA stiffing everyone for money and Lawler walking away and claiming the USWA title still had AWA support behind it.

Didn't Flair lose the NWA Title to Carlos Colon in Puerto Rico as well?
And Flair related but not thread related, but it still makes me laugh: I remember in his book (or somewhere else, I'm not 100% where I saw/heard Flair say it) that he said he brought Harley Race to Japan with him because he was afraid that Jumbo Tsuruta was going to shoot and take the NWA Title.

Yeah, he brought Race out to ringside to keep Jumbo honest I believe.

Race dropped the belt to Baba without approval from the NWA board as a favor to help Baba's company. He got it back a week later.

This was really a non-switch, but I remember when Jericho was on fire early in his WWE career he beat HHH on Raw for the title, then while he was celebrating Trips got on the jumbotron and said "Oh, by the way, that wasn't a title match"
Jericho meekly gave the belt back and headed to the locker room. I didn't watch Raw for at least 3 months after that.

I remember going batshit when Jericho won the belt, and then when they did that, I turned Nitro on. I very quickly went back to RAW because really dude, it was 2000 WCW.

I've kinda blocked out the detail, I was really aggravated.. I was just getting back into wrestling after not really following it in college, and that really just totally blew it for me for a while.. I just went back to anime
