I think it's the appeal of having your guy and your buddies guys in the set. This.

That's really where it has grown on me. I really got into it at a time where the POW and aCe were dormant and the GWF wasn't cutting it for me. The GWFZ really came along and had that sense of adventure and creativity that the GWF was lacking from 2121-2124 for me.
And there is a certain investment in the GWFZ because so many of the characters are promoter created. I entered my MMA fighting kangaroo into it. I check my PMs maybe 5-6 times a day seeing if Swarm has sent me the artwork for him yet. I am totally pumped for it because I made a character for it. And I'll probably read other GWFZ threads just to see how my creation is being used.
Plus... 90 cards for 30 bucks is a great deal.

I think it's the appeal of having your guy and your buddies guys in the set. This. To some extent, it's that. I've seen some very inventive characters previewed so far, and this points to what the real draw of COTG has always been: not the official storylines, but the creativity this simple system inspires in people. When you're given a very structured, very rules heavy game system it can be limiting. The simplicity of the system and the open encouragement to use your imagination (the constant "it's up to you" reminders) is what's kept things going for so long, even during the lean years when the official storylines have been kind of lackluster. We fill in the blanks a lot and sometimes that makes even a weak story seem great because of what we imagine in the margins, so to speak. In other words, we often create a greater story in our heads than what's written on paper and then give the credit to the writer for something we fleshed out based on the structure he laid down. We all, under the best of circumstances, feed off of the creativity of each other and are inspired to try to expand upon what the other guy did, or something someone else wrote or a character they created sparks an idea for something else, and it builds from there. That's why I don't get the frequent grumpiness about not liking the direction of the official stuff (although I do understand it to some extent on one level): you know the game system and there are endless options for expanding it on your own if you don't like the official stuff. So do it. That seems to be what a whole lot of people have done with this GWFZ set. This is the logical evolution of the old standard of trading homemade bootlegs or posting them online. People are sharing characters in a format that puts them on even ground (from an appearance and production standpoint) with the official stuff. Now these great characters will look and feel like they "belong" with the official product. Plus, the "not Savage" drawing is one of the best I've seen from Werner. Add "not Hogan" and "future Quackenbush" to the mix and I think this GWFZ set has something for everyone. $30 for that many cards is one helluva a deal, too.

I didn't create a Z wrestler, but Swarm and everyone who has worked on the Z product from the first set have done a great job. I pre-ordered the GWFZT set, 80+ for $30 is a great deal and I love the Big Superstar and Freak Out concepts. I'll be using the GWFZT stuff over time in my TNE WRESTLING!...

Great post, Mark. I agree 100%.. that's the reason I like the LWA, and why I have post fed results in the past.
I really just haven't mustered up any enthusiasism to play of late, but if I did, I would definitely have to think about getting it, for sure.

The art came in for my character. Swarm might use him in the next set of teasers and I'll post a link to it over here if it happens. Let's just say he looks awesome.

maddog1981 your entry is he with just MMA stats or can he be used in normal wrestling matches? If he can wrestle in normal matches he'll be in my TNE WRESTLING! parody / surreal humour fed with others from the GWFZT release...

He's a normal wrestler, he just uses MMA moves exclusively. He has one wrestling styled move as a signature move and that's it.

If you guys are members at Swarm's board. Chuck the Roo is my submission and you can vote for him to see him in the next teasers.
