What I'm doing to do for the time being is run a bunch of preseason games as I learn the rules and figure out which advanced rules I want to play. I also need to order stat sheets to make my life easier. I'm hoping to be running the season in a couple of weeks. That's if I get the playing time to really learn it.
Anyways. For those a little rusty this was the landscape of the NHL in 1997-1998:
Eastern Conference:
Atlantic Division:
New Jersey Devils New York Rangers New York Islanders Philadelphia Flyers Washington Capitals Florida Panthers Tampa Bay Lightning
Northeast Division:
Boston Bruins Buffalo Sabers Carolina Hurricanes Pittsburgh Penguins Montreal Canadians Ottawa Senators
Western Conference:
Central Division:
Dallas Stars Detroit Red Wings Chicago Blackhawks Phoenix Coyotes St. Louis Blues Toronto Maple Leafs
Pacific Division:
Calgary Flames Colorado Avalanche Anaheim Mighty Ducks Edmonton Oilers Los Angeles Kings San Jose Sharks Vancouver Canucks

I've never been a hockey fan. Were the Penguins any good that year?

New York Islanders: 1 Ottawa Senators: 3
Damian Rhodes made 21 saves as he led the Ottawa Senators to a preseason victory on the road over the New York Islanders. Igor Kravchuk, Danny Lambert and Pat Falloon all scored goals as the Senators outshot the Islanders 31 to 22. Jason York also had a notable performance for the Senators by recording 2 assists for the night.
New York was frustrated by the defense of Ottawa. By the third period they were just settling for outside shots on the goal. They were also unable to get many breakaway chances or get rebound shots off of Rhodes. Salo made 28 saves in a losing effort.

I've never been a hockey fan. Were the Penguins any good that year? 40-24-18 and 1st in the Northeast. Jagr had 35 goals and 67 assists for a league leading 102 pts. Ron Francis had 25 goals and 62 assists for 87 pts. Tom Barrasso had a pretty nice year in goal too. They got bounced by Montreal in the first round though.

I remember those names. I only ever pay attention during the playoffs.

Edmonton Oilers: 1 at Los Angeles Kings: 2
Glen Murray scored early in the 1st period on a powerplay. Shortly afterwards, Luc Robitaille added a goal and the Kings were up 2-0. The Oilers managed to make it a 2-1 game off of a Janne Ninimaa goal. That was as close as it got as the Oilers couldn't find the back of the net for the rest of the game.
Stephane Fiset recorded 34 saves for the Kings while giving up a single goal. Curtis Joseph struggled early but eventually shut down the Kings and made 27 saves in a losing effort.
Rob Blake also made his presence known for the Kings as he recorded an assist on both goals scored.

I read over the advanced and I have a good grasp on things. So I'm going to kick the season off at some point this week with Detroit vs. Calgary.

Detroit Red Wings (1-0-0): 6 at Calgary Flames (0-1-0): 1
This was an ugly home opener for the Flames. Brendan Shanahan scored 2 power play goals in the first period as Detroit quickly gained a 4-0 lead. Detroit added 2 more goals in the second period and the Calgary manager was forced to pull Rick Tabaracci in favor of Dwayne Roloson.
Roloson made 12 saves as he stopped the bleeding for the Flames. Marty IcInnis scored a goal in the third period to prevent the shutout.
Chris Osgood made 28 saves in a winning effort for Detroit. Steve Yzerman, Bob Rouse, Igor Larionov and Brent Gilchrist all scored goals for Detroit.
Rick Tabaracci allowed 6 goals on 18 shots and was pulled about halfway into the second period. The Flames' manager has refused to comment on who will start in net for the Flames in their next game.
W - Chris Osgood (1-0-0) L - Rick Tabaracci (0-1-0)

Wow... 6 goals is a heck of a high scoring opener.

Tabaracci has Goals on his 6 and 7 rolls and Detroit kept coming up with Goalie Ratings. Needless to say, he got abused really bad. Calgary gave up 252 goals in this season. Which made them 22nd out of 26. Their goal tending situation is pretty bad as the goalies combined only save 89% of the shots that come their way.
I was surprised though. Detroit got 5 power play opportunities and scored on 3 of them. Calgary also couldn't really set up good shots. Fluery had about 7 shots and couldn't get one in. They only got a goal because they amped it up to a 3 offense with 2 forecheckers and Detroit went down to a 1 offense to protect their lead. If I had left Tabaracci in, I wonder if Detroit could've gotten 8 goals.
Up next, the Dallas Stars at the Colorado Avalanche.

I was hoping to have a Dallas/Colorado final tonight but that one's heading to overtime tied at 1-1. Stay tuned for it tomorrow.

How long does it take to play 1 game? I assume you are playing a table version and not computer?

I'm still learning. I had basic down to 45 minutes. Advanced is taking me like 90 minutes currently.

Dallas Stars (0-0-1): 1 at Colorado Avalanche (0-0-1): 1
Two Stanley Cup favorites met up in this season opener. This game quickly became all about the goalies as Patrick Roy made 43 saves and Ed Belfour made 32 saves.
Jari Kurri scored late in the second to put Colorado up 1-0 but Dallas answered the call in the third off a Joe Nieuwendyk goal to tie it up.
Overtime was a real mess for the Avs as they committed two penalties. Roy made some incredible saves down the stretch and overtime passed with no goals scored.
Both teams pick up a point to start their season.
T - Patrick Roy (0-0-1) T - Ed Belfour (0-0-1)
