So a lot of talk's been going around about this RAW 20th Anniversary set that WWE's putting out. At first, it seemed like a run of the mill, who gives a fuck DVD release...until this came from Wrestling DVD News:
A commenter later mentioned they contacted FremantleMedia (WWE DVD distributors in the UK) and they confirmed it's a 12 disc DVD, 10 disc Blu Ray.
So, what are your thoughts? Like the idea? Hate the idea? Hope this sells well enough that SmackDown gets a 15th Anniversary set too?

So it's just 20 "great" episodes of Raw? And the big deal is?

So it's just 20 "great" episodes of Raw? And the big deal is? The fact they've never released a set like this before, much less unedited? The fact that if this sells well enough it opens the doors for them to do more sets of other shows?

Some info regarding some of the episodes courtesy of Wrestling DVD News:
The synopsis confirms, as we’ve been reporting, that the box set will be 12 discs on DVD and 10 discs on Blu-ray. It also affirms the “greatest episodes” theme of the release and divulges 5 matches you can expect to see from episodes included on there.
I live the 1/4/99 and 5/10/99 episodes being included as well as the 03 RW Roulette. Not really sure about the XV Anniversary, though.

Interesting concept... The things that seem strange to me is that
1. NFL and MLB will always make more money than WWE, but most people don't go back and watch old Superbowls or regular season games to relive their childhood sports memories. They might watch clip and highlight films. Wrestling is different because most of us who are fans DO watch old matches over and over... I also watch old pay per views from beginning to end, but those are supposed to be special.
2. When I buy DVD sets of tv shows I like, I buy them by season and watch them in order. I don't buy a Best of The Office set or anything like that. That idea sounds strange for a best of Raw episodes as well. Even if I watch old ECW TV tapes or the Portland DVDs that justme's friend sold, I'd prefer watching it chronologically even if it sucked. I also know Raw has released Season 1 and Season 2 DVDs, but I am guessing the sales on those sets were weak which is why they are trying this strategy now.
WWE has undoubtedly hired a bunch of market researchers to think about these issues and write reports analyzing how much profit it can project, etc. I'm interested for my own curiosity of what the market will show for this idea.

I don't buy a Best of The Office set or anything like that. That idea sounds strange for a best of Raw episodes as well. Even if I watch old ECW TV tapes or the Portland DVDs that justme's friend sold, I'd prefer watching it chronologically even if it sucked. Factor in that an Office season set is what, four discs? RAW is (on average) 52 two hour episodes of TV. That's not going to really work out for a full season set every year. I remember a few years back someone asked why WWE doesn't do full seasons and got told they do the compilation 'Best of' sets because it's too expensive to do a 20+ disc set when the market probably isn't there for it. If this set is $63 for 20 episodes, imagine how much a full 52 episode set would cost. I also know Raw has released Season 1 and Season 2 DVDs, but I am guessing the sales on those sets were weak which is why they are trying this strategy now. Well, those sets selling poorly probably didn't have any effect on this but if they were still doing those, we'd be on 1999-2000 this year. Apparently this set's been in the works for a while, though. WWE has undoubtedly hired a bunch of market researchers to think about these issues and write reports analyzing how much profit it can project, etc. I'm interested for my own curiosity of what the market will show for this idea. I think this will sell just fine. It comes out right before Christmas (three weeks to be exact) and it'll get advertised all over the place. This is a huge deal going forward because if it sells, they'll probably put out a SmackDown XV Anniversary next year and possibly full episodes of Nitro and such.

Well a set like this, the more money you spend in advertising and distribution, the more you stand to lose. Higher SGA costs just aren't likely to increase the bottom line for a niche product that would only appeal to a small minority of fans, in my opinion. I'd think you just put the word out there, mention it on air where you can advertise your product for free, and then let the diehard fans who will get it find it on the WWE website. Which I'm sure was probably their strategy anyway.

Still think spending much money advertising it would be a mistake, but I'm curious to see what the profit margin for such a product would be regardless.

I agree with Chewey... I think it's just tough due to the volume of the content to release full episodes.
I wonder how much content would be left if they cut out the replays and recaps? Would that make it short enough to be viable?

1/11/93, 2/24/97, 4/13/98, 4/27/98, 3/26/01 10/3/05 and 1/4/10 got confirmed today. I agree with Chewey... I think it's just tough due to the volume of the content to release full episodes. If they cut out commercials the average 1 hour RAW is like 43 minutes, the average 2 hour RAW is 1:35:00. They can do roughly three hours per disc. They'll be just fine.

I have no idea what episodes they are, but I'd like to see:
- DX dresses as the Corporation - Stephanie dumps Test and show up married to HHH - Jericho's debut, where he completely obliterates the Rock in a promo - At least one where Ken Shamrock snaps - At least one with E&C doing a 5 second pose - The Hardys debut, with Michael Hayes as their manager (or so early appearance when Hayes was with them) - Angle drinking milk to celebate winning the title.
I'm totally fine if they have to do some Benoit editing to make this happen, or even better if they don't.

I doubt he gets edited off the set honestly. He's kept on sets now, they just edit his name off of commentary and occasionally clip his entrance.
