Tragedy struck the little Pennsylvania town of Punxustawney this morning when the world's most famous groundhog Punxustawney Phil failed to emerge from his home on Gobbler's Knob and was found dead a short time later. Sources report a bottle of arsenic was found laying just a few feet from Punsky Phil. This ended a 120 year tradition of the groundhog predicting a longer winter or early spring. Pennsylvania State Police are taking the matter seriously and spent the day conducting interviews with the local townspeople, tourists and members of the WWWF roster. Shortly before bell time tonight the PA State Police released a statement saying that they had several people of interest but declined to name anyone as a official suspect. The WWWF championship committee which had planned on deciding the second contender for the Intercontinental title based on Punsky Phil's prediction will make a decision in the next few weeks.

Playboy Buddy Rose b. S.D Jones ** Playboy Buddy Rose was looking for some payback against Special Delivery Jones after losing to Jones a few weeks back at the Philadelphia Spectrum. Rose hit Jones with his Bombs Away finisher for good measure and rolled him over for the easy three count
Iron Sheik b. Jimmy Snuka *** Jimmy Snuka had the crowd convinced he had the match won when he climbed the top turnbuckle following a flying headbutt. The match came to a surprise ending when The iron Sheik rolled out of the way of his Snuka's superfly leap at the last second , recovered, and hit Snuka with a sidewinder suplex for the win

Midnight Express - Kangaroos Double DQ ** A big match between two of the top tag team title contenders turned ugly when Jim Cornette and Wild Red Berry became involved in a shoving match outside the ring that brought both the Midnight Express and The Kangaroos out of the ring to intervene on the part of their managers. The Road Warriors b. The Dream Team ** Coming off a big win last week over the Killer Bees Valentine and Beefcake arrived at the arena tonight declaring themselves the next WWWF tag team champions and guaranteeing a quick victory over the Legion Of Doom. Punxustawney Phil - The PA State Police Ground Hog Task force has narrowed down its list of suspects and focusing on a member of the WWWF roster. WWWF officials report that everyone has cooperated wit the investigation with the exception of Greg Valentine who failed to appear at the State Police barracks for his polygraph test and The Iron Sheik who had a outburst during a routine round of questioning and trashed the interrogation room.

WWF NEWS A meeting of the 3 man championship committee was supposed to take place this morning but was called off due to 2 of the 3 members Gorilla Monsoon and Tito Santana becoming suddenly ill due to a severe case of food poisoning. That left the third member a very healthy Bobby Heenan to rule that the Intercontinental title shot should go to his man Nick Bockwinkel. Heenan stated the agreement was that Bockwinkel got the title shot if Punxustaweny Phil didn't see his shadow there was nothing stating that the groundhog had to alive. Bobo Brazil immediately accused Heenan of foul play and filed a grievance with the WWWF holding up Bockwinkel's Intercontinental match. The other Intercontinental contender Frank Gotch pointed out that according to the championship committee rules in a case like this a decision must be made within a month or the he'll become the intercontinental champion. More on this situation this weekend in white plains
