Masterson (1-1) allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings and struck out nine. Del Ennis (1949 PHN) finally woke up at the plate for Philadelphia, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run. Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) had two RBI. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) held the Phillies to two runs in five innings despite giving up seven hits. He was helped out in the bottom of the first when Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) hit into a Triple Play with runners at second and third. Amish sneak past Susquehannocks 4-3 [/FONT][/center] A close game was decided by the defense when an outfield error allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the ninth for Cumberland Valley. Max Bishop (1928 PHA) led off with a walk against Joe Klink (1990 OAK). Nellie Fox (HOF) put down his third sacrifice bunt of the game. With two out, Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit a shot to leftfield that Harry Lumley (1906 BRO) couldn't handel in leftfield and the winning run scored. Shawkey squishes Mudpuppies [/FONT][/center] Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) two-hit the Lake Erie Mudpuppies and Elk County came away with a 3-1 win. Shawkey (2-1) gave up a one-out single to Sherry Magee (1910 PHN) in the top of the sixth inning and a solo home run to Joe Collins (1952 NYY) with two out in the ninth. Shawkey walked two and struck out four. John Ward (HOF) singled a run home in the bottom of the first for the Outdoorsmen. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) gave up his second hit in the sixth when Ward doubled, and then Red Murray (1910 NYG) doubled him home. Musial powers Laurel to 8-5 win [/FONT][/center] Stan "The Man" Musial (HOF) went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Highlanders over Fort McIntosh 8-5. Laurel pounded out 19 hits with both Griffeys taking the day off. Musial leads the league with 22 RBI. John Burkett (1993 SFN) gave up five runs on 13 hits in six innings to take the loss. Joe Beimel (2002 PIT) gave up three more runs in 1 2/3 innings. Bob Moose (1968 PIT) gave up one unearned run on two hits in seven innings for the win. Pirates pummel Tribe 10-3 [/FONT][/center] Buddy Bell (HER) drove in three and Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) dominated the Indians en route to a 10-3 win. All nine Pirate starters had at least one hit. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 3 for 5 with three runs and four stolen bases. Bobby Del Greco (1952 PIT) was 3 for 5 and Spike Shannon (1906 NYG) had two RBI. McDowell (2-1) didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning. He had a shutout in the ninth until Cal Abrams (1954 BAL) doubled a run home. McDowell went 8 1/3, allowing four hits with six walks and eight strikeouts. Jim Shaw (1918 WAS) allowed two more runs that were charged to McDowell. Amish melt down, Susquehannocks rally, win 12-11 [/FONT][/center] An incredible meltdown by the Amish Men and spectacular comeback win by the Susquehannocks. Trailing 11-4, Turkey Island scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to win 12-11. Cumberland Valley built a huge 10-0 lead after three innings. Mike Mowrey (1910 SLN) had two doubles and four RBI for the Susquehannocks. Bruce Sutter (HER) was brought in to stop the come back but he was woefully inadequate. With the bases loaded, he let all three runs in and then gave up three more of his own and is now 0-3 on the year. Joe Shaute (1928 CLE) relieved Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) after the starter gave up seven runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in two innings. Shaute (1-0) pitched five innings for the win, allowing four runs on nine hits. Stan Belinda retired the side in the ninth for his fourth save. Ken Raffensberger (1951 CIN) went six innings and thought he had a win but the bullpen gave it away. Vic Wertz (1950 DET) had a monster 4 for 8 game with a grand slam and eight RBI but the Amish still lost the game.

Manto bomb beats Philly [/FONT][/center] Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) belted a two-run homer and Ray Caldwell (1914 NYY) pitched a complete game as the Minutemen beat Philadelphia 4-3. Manto drilled his second home run of the year in the top of the fourth to put the Minutemen up 4-3. There was no more scoring the rest of the way. Caldwell (2-2) went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) also finished what he started in taking the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits. Charlie Carr (1914 IND FL) also homered off Walters (1-3). Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) led off the eighth with a home run off Jeff Mutis (1993 CLE). The Miners went on to bat around and score eight runs, five earned off Mutis. Appalachian outhit LeHigh 18-11. Paul Hartzell (1977 CAL) gave up two runs on nine hits in six innings for the win. Joe Ostrowski (1950 NYY) threw three shutout innings of relief for the save. Mudpuppies steal 3-2 win [/FONT][/center] Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) singled to drive in the John Ward (HOF) and the Outdoorsmen beat the Mudpuppies 3-2 in 10 innings. Ward singled, stole second, and went to third on catcher Carl Sawatski (1961 SLN) second throwing error of the game. Jones then singled to right off Ron Kline (1968 PIT) to win the game. Jim Duffalo (1964 SFN) came on in the 10th with two on and no out and got out of the jam to receive the win for Elk County. Lake Erie outhit the Outdoorsmen 8-5, with Scot Thompson (1979 CUB) going 3 for 4. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) gave up one unearned run and two hits in seven innings for a no-decision. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) picked up his sixth save of the year when Hack Wilson's (HOF) drive to rightfield came up just short of tying the game. Wagner drives Pirates to 16-1 win [/FONT][/center] Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 6 with four RBI and the Pittsburgh Pirates blew away the Allegheny Indians 16-1. Pittsburgh scored in six different innings and finished with 16 hits. Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) and Spike Shannon (1906 NYG) each had three RBI, with Shannon also going 4 for 6. Bill Doak (1914 SLN) is now 4-0 on the year, allowing one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Pirates pummeled three different pitchers for the Indians.

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the first but Delaware Valley chipped away. Jackson homered in the fourth and hit three-run blast in the fifth gave them a 5-2 lead. Lake Erie scored three runs in the eighth off Sparky Lyle (HER) to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Outdoorsmen scored three off Ron Kline (1968 PIT). Kline blew the save in the ninth, and took a second straight loss, when Good plated two runs with a base hit to right to win the game and finish with three RBI. The Susquehannocks had a 6-2 lead when they took Chrisy Mathewson (HOF) out of the game. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) came in and got into trouble in the eighth. Stan Belinda (1993 PIT) couldn't stop the Industrialists as they scored four runs off Steele and two off Belinda. In the bottom of the eighth, Al Spangler (1964 HOU) and Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) hit back to back triples. Joe Boley (1930 PHA), Eddie Stanky (1949 BON) and Dom Dallessandro (1941 CUB) all singled to take the lead. Just a note, in the minors for Cumberland Valley is a pitcher named King Lear, from the 1915 Cincinnati Reds.

Wade Miller (2002 HOU) was bombed for seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings and Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) worked the last frame but LeHigh Valley was unable to come back. Bressler (3-0) also walked three and stranded 10 Allegheny base runners. He lowered his ERA to 0.36. Don Hoak (1957 CIN) went 3 for 4 with his first home run and four RBI for the Outdoorsmen. Sauer is sweet in 10-1 win [/FONT][/center] Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) belted two home runs and drovein five and the Pittsburgh Pirates blasted the Fort McIntosh Militia 10-1. Sauer is the first to reach 10 home runs on the season. Sauer is on an eight-game hitting streak, raising his average from .222 to .329 and hitting seven home runs over that span. Sauer also moved ahead of Stan Musial (HOF) for the league lead with 24 RBI. Bobby Wallace (HOF) went 3 for 5 with two RBI for the Bucs. It was Bill Doak (1914 SLN) taking care of the pitching dutites, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Doak is 5-0 to start the year. Bailor bop beats Erie [/FONT][/center] Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) hit a two-run shot to break a tie game and Laurel went on to edge Lake Erie 9-6. Bailor's first shot of the season was one of three on the night for the Highlanders, with Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) and Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) each hitting their seventh roundtripper of the season. It was a back and forth slugfest with 12 total runs scored in the first four innings. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) lasted six innings to improve to 4-0, giving up five runs on eight hits. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) notched his seventh save and is yet to give up a run this year. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) gave up seven runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in four innings for the loss. Two errors on second baseman Claude Ritchey (1903 PIT) resulted in three unearned runs for the Highlanders. The closer has not allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings of work, and has only given up two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts. All four runs came after two were out. A pair of walks and a single by Russ Wrightstone (1927 PHN) loaded the bases. Deal pinch-hit and in his first game of the year cleared the bases with a double. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) threw the ninth for his eighth save of the season, with Bobby Locke (1960) getting his fourth hold in the eighth inning. April Keystone State League Hitter of the Month
HONUS WAGNER Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates is off to a furious start this season in the Keystone State League, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a share of first place in the Western Division. Wagner has shifted to right field instead of his usual shortstop position to allow for Bobby Wallace to get in the lineup. Wagner is the table setter for the Bucs, leading off the batting order and topping the Keystone League with a .432 average. Wagner is also first in runs scored (26), total hits (38), stolen bases (23), on base percentage (.485), runs created per 27 outs (14.5), total average (1.564) and average vs. lefties (.560). BILL DOAK Bill Doak is the No. 3 starter in the Pirates rotation, but has rolled through the first month of the season, contributing to the best pitching staff in the league. "Spittin' Bill" or "Lumbago Bill" as he has been called, went a perfect 6-0 in six starts this year. His 1.18 ERA is third in the league and he is fifth in innings pitched. Doak worked one shutout and has allowed six earned runs in 45 2/3 innings. Right-handers are hitting .181 against him.
