Miller lulls Miners to sleep [/FONT][/center] Wade Miller (2002 HOU) turned in his best outing of the season in tossing a seven-hitter and LeHigh Valley downed the Coal Miners 7-0. Miller (2-3) walked one and struck out four, not allowing a hit until the fifth. He lowered his ERA to 4.09. The Industrialists broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. Frank Grube (1934 SLA) plated two runs with clutch single off Stan Coveleski (HOF). Ramon Martinez (2002 SFN) entered in the seventh and hit his first home run in the seventh. Coveleski (1-4) gave up five runs on seven hits. Ron Northey (1944 PHN) lined into a triple play and had to leave the game with an injury for Appalachian. Philadelphia at Delaware Valley
Richie one-hits Phils [/FONT][/center] Lew Richie (1906 PHN) lost his no-hitter in the seventh but shutout the Phillies on one hit, 3-0. Richie (2-1) made his first start of the year a memorable one. Jeff Leonard broke up the no-no with a base hit in the top of the seventh. Richie walked two and struck out five. Tom Filer (1988 MLA) also started for the first time for Philadelphia. He went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Mike Piazza (HER) hit a first-inning two-run homer for the Minutemen. (1910 PHA) doubled home the final run. Priddy deals Tribe 2-1 loss [/FONT][/center] Bob Priddy (1968 CHA) edged Bill Carrick (1901 WAS) on the mound and the Indians won 2-1. Priddy (2-1) worked eight innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) handled the ninth for his first save. Carrick (0-1) was good in his first start of the year, giving up two runs on five hits in the complete game loss. Laurel gets by Bucs 4-3 [/FONT][/center] The Highlanders gained a split of the four-game series by holding off the Pirates for a 4-3 win. Laurel took advantage when the chances were there, scoring four runs with only one earned. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) got the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) still has not allowed a run and picked up his ninth save. Al Mamaux (1915 PIT) fell to 4-1 despite not giving up an earned run on the night. He allowed six hits and three walks in six innings. Bobby Wallace (HOF) hit a two-run homer to pull Pittsburgh within one at 3-2, but Ken Griffey Jr. greeted Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) with a solo blast. Junior homers twice, Highlanders roll 16-9 [/FONT][/center] A ridiculous lack of pitching or defense, coupled with tons of hitting, resulted in the Highlanders storming through the Susquehannocks 16-9. Laurel had three errors and Turkey Island made four. Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) homered twice and drove in four runs for the Highlanders, who outhit Turkey Island 19-14. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) went 4 for 6 and Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) was 3 for 6 with three RBI for Laurel. Clyde Barnhart (1925 PIT) was 4 for 5 with two doubles for the Susquehannocks. Joe Martin (1903 SLA) had two triples and three RBI. Christy Mathewson gave up seven runs -- four earned -- in one-plus innings and left the game with an undisclosed injury for the Susquehannocks. The Mudpuppies hammered out 13 hits in six innings off Eddie Plank (HOF). Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) had two RBI and Jack Dunn (1901 BAL) went 3 for 5. Bench rallies Pirates to 6-5 win [/FONT][/center] Pittsburgh's bench did the job in coming back with four runs the final two innings to beat LeHigh Valley 6-5. Bill Regan (1927 BOA) was called up for the injured Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) and went 3 for 4 with two RBI in his first game of the season. Harry Covelski (1916 DET) carried a shutout into the ninth with one out before Dick Allen (HER) homered for the Militia. Covelski (5-1) allowed just five hits. Elks rally to nip Phils 2-1 [/FONT][/center] Elk County found a way to score two run in the eighth inning and pull out a 2-1 win over Philadelphia. Don Hoak (1957 CIN) tied the game with a base hit, and Red Murray (1910 NYG) hit a sacrifice fly to take the lead. Rube Waddell (HOF) gave up a solo home run to Del Ennis (1949 PHN) in the bottom of the fourth. Waddell (3-3) went eight innings for the win, allowing six hits and striking out six. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) came in for his sixth save. Bucky Walters (1944 CIN) had the shutout going in the eighth inning for the Phillies, but falls to 1-5 on the year. Musial homers twice in extra inning win [/FONT][/center] Stan "The Man" Musial (HOF) cranked two home runs, including the game winner as the Laurel Highlanders beat the Susquehannocks 12-10 in 11 innings. The Highlanders had a 10-2 lead in the middle of the seventh inning. Turkey Island came back with five in the seventh, including a grand slam by Rip Collins (1934 SLN). An error allowed Mike Mowrey (1910 SLN) to belt a two-run homer off Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) to tie the game. Musial's second home run of the game came in the 11th off Stan Belinda (1993). Dykes crushes Outdoorsmen, Phils win 14-0 [/FONT][/center] Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) went 4 for 5, homered and drove in five runs and Phillies lambasted the Outdoorsmen 14-0. On the mound it was Mark Gubicza (1988 KCA) throwing a four-hit shutout with three walks and three strikeouts. Of the 14 runs scored, only five were earned as a pair of outfield errors opened the flood gates. Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) gave up 10 runs, three earned, on 11 hits in five innings for the loss.

Owens took the complete game loss, allowing one earned run on five hits. Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) tripled a run home in the first, and an error on Sherry Magee (1910 PHN) let the second run in. Turkey Island scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game 6-6. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) couldn't get the save in relief of Jim Shaw (1918 WAS), and left Bill Doak (1914 SLN) with a no-decision. From there it was great relief pitching from both teams. Bill Steele (1910 SLN) threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits. Then Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) completely shut down the Pirates, going 5 1/3 innings and not allowing a hit or a walk. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) came on in the last of the 20th, gave up one run, but got his second save. For Pittsburgh, after Miljus gave up the lead, threw seven innings with no runs and three hits allowed. Lew Moren (1909 PHN) took the loss, going four innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Honus Wagner (HOF) had the day off, but pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth and ended up going 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. Wagner did throw Moose McCormick (1909 NYG) out at home plate in the 16th. Turkey Island threatened in the 17th and 18th but failed to score. Top 20, a one out walk was followed by a Craig Grebeck (1993 CHA) double to score the go-ahead run. The Pirates scored seven runs in two innings against Don Schwall (1961 BOA). Honus Wagner (HOF) and Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) each had three hits for the Bucs. Mike Mussina (HER) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Don Hoak (1957 CIN) hit three doubles and had two RBI for the Outdoorsmen. Dick Groat (1960 PIT) went 3 for 4 for the Tribe. Bob Priddy (1968 CHA) worked into the sixth inning for the win, allowing one run on three hits. Bob Hall (1949 BON) pitched 2 2/3 innings, but put two men on base in the last of the ninth. Curt Leskanic (1995 CON) gassed those two runs in and one more before finally getting his third save. LeHigh nips Militia 5-4 [/FONT][/center] A great back and forth game saw LeHigh score one run in the last of the eighth and hold on to beat the Militia 5-4. Fort McIntosh came oh so close to getting a win that is so desperately needed. The Militia led 1-0, tied the game at 3-3 and 4-4. Mickey Morandin (1995 PHN) homered and drove in all four runs for Fort McIntosh. Carl Furillo (1953 BRO) homered and had two RBI for the Industrialists. Willie Adams (1918 PHA) was the losing pitcher, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on four hits in three innings. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) picked up the win with three innings of work, giving up one run on two hits. Rich Delucia (1995 SLN) struck out the side in the ninth for his league-leading 11th save. LeHigh Valley left 12 men on base and Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) walked four times -- twice intentionally.
