Anyone else remember these? Obviously being made by Sculptured Software (the geniuses behind WWF WrestleMania: Steel Cage Challenge, the SNES WWF games, WWF War Zone/Attitude/the ECW games), you shouldn't expect anything that's well...good, but for their time and given my expectations for them, these weren't that bad.
But in retrospect? These games were terrible. Ricky Steamboat had the Stunner. Okay, whatever...but he FUCKING FLIPS OFF HIS OPPONENT BEFORE HE DOES IT. RICKY STEAMBOAT, THE BABYFACE, FLIPS THE FUCKING BIRD.
The game had a cool grapple system that had you able to lock up, go to a different position (suplex, piledriver, bearhug, etc) and then you could perform moves from there. You could also link moves, which was really innovative as well. But as you can imagine, the AI was awful.
The games did have redeeming qualities though. For their time (and arguably still today), they had the best rosters ever. You had nearly everyone by the time the series was over. The final game in the series had Hogan, Andre, Warrior, Sting, Savage, DDP and Jake Roberts...and that was just the cover art. Past that, you had Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, The Road Warriors, the Koloffs, the Von Erichs, One Man Gang, King Kong Bundy, Owen Hart, British Bulldog, Bret Hart, Sid, Dynamite Kid, Rick Martel, Tito Santana, Brian Pillman, the list goes on and on and on. I'm probably leaving noteworthy guys out, but the rosters are that stacked.
Showdown had licensed arenas. Wanna have Hogan vs. Andre at the Silverdome? You can. Want Sting vs. Warrior at the Tokyo Dome? Go ahead! LA Sports Arena, Skydome, the Spectrum, Wembley Stadium...a ton of really great arenas in that game.
Oh, and eight man elimination tag matches are in. Until Action Arcade Wrestling 2 comes out, these games and Fire Pro Wrestling D/Z/Returns are the only games to have those matches.
The career mode in LOW I and II was cool. You started out working your way up through the territories, then traveling across the US and then you fought your way to being the World Champion. LOW II was particularly cool because there were different 'storylines' that you had to play through such as having to go through the Von Erichs in Texas, or the female promoter in the southeast having the hots for your character, or you having to be the bodyguard of the Vince McMahon ripoff's daughter.
But again, it all comes back to the gameplay, which was particularly awful, especially in the third game, Showdown. Glitches ruined what would have otherwise been a par for the course game. But I will say, I have a lot of nostalgia for these games and I do not hate them. So with that said, here's the entrances from the second and third games!
