I grew up on 80s wrestling and knew Hulk Hogan had the mainstream appeal (although his movies were beyond bad). In the 90s, the Rock and Austin had the appeal
But, in full disclosure, since WCW went out, I haven't been into wrestling like I had for the previous 20 years. We all know Cena is the face of the company now, which they push him in their WWE movies, some guest appearances, etc.
But does Cena have the mainstream appeal like Hogan, ROck or Austin has? I don't know...I have kids, married now, so I don't pay attention to the entertainment stuff has much. Was curious....

He's got mainstream appeal, but not as much so across the board as Austin and Rock did in the sense that everybody loved them. Not really the case with Cena. He does well when whatever he's involved with is kid oriented (ie Fred: The Movie, things of that nature) and he does well on late night talk shows, but his movies all tank. He's the biggest star of this era, and he's pushed more merchandise than anyone else, but he's light years away from having the appeal/fan base that Austin and Rock did.

...and like I said, I had no idea. What you said seems to make sense.
I just asked because I knew he had that movie coming out.
When you say pushed more merchandise, is that in recent memory or all time?

That's interesting. Good for him if so. I have nothing against him...

Merchandise is far more prevalent today that it was... so I'm not surprised.
Plus, you never know how they're calculating... if they're going by $$ spent, obviously the newer guys will be higher due to inflation.

Sad thing is Cena's new film was announced at SummerSlam that the movie was being released on DVD tomorrow but I've heard that Wal-mart already put it on their shelves a day or so back and that's a hint that this film didn't cut it...

The film was only released in select theaters so there was no wide release. I think this was originally going to be a straight to DVD deal but someone pulled some strings at the last minute.

Legendary is supposed to be a Wal-mart exclusive tomorrow (on DVD) and a Best Buy exclusive (on Blu Ray) for tomorrow. It's release date is 12/28/10 otherwise. I order a DVD copy from Wal-mart today (along with Frozen), so i will let you know when I see it.
