Can someone PLEASE explain this to me? I understand some of the older fans dislike how quickly titles change anymore, and I agree that the major companies swap belts around too often. But the thing I don't get is, how does it effect what the title is worth? Wouldn't titles changing quickly be a testament to how competitive said division is?
And as far as the claims the titles aren't worth anything, the WWE constantly pushes that their title is the most prestigious honor in wrestling. Look at the lineage, with the exception of a select few, they're pretty much right. The list of people who've held that title is a who's who of wrestlers. Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, John Cena, The Rock, Steve Austin, Bruno Sammartino, Buddy Rogers, Bob Backlund. How can a title mean nothing, much less have no value when those names have held the belt?
I mean after all, shouldn't a title be worth what the company says it's worth?
Not trying to start an argument here, it's just something that bugs me because it really doesn't make any sense.

I agree. I've seen it said twice recently and didn't care to bother to point out the ludicrousness of the statement. Guy hates the champ - the title means nothing. Guy loves the champ - all is right in the world.
Where the title loses it luster is when someone wins the title and never gets a clean win. Or when Mysterio wins the title and loses in non-title action every week. Actually, not only loses but gets ass wrecked. I never got the need to put the title on Rey Rey and the job him out. But then again I would never put a heavyweight title on a guy that's 5'2", 140 lbs.

I think there are very definite instances of a titles value being damaged if you ask me. I think the WWE for all of it's faults has actually done a reasonable job with their world titles.
Now, if you want to talk a company that did some serious damage to their belt. New Japan Pro Wrestling is example 1 of how to fuck your title hard. From the start of Fujita's first reign to the start of Hiroshi Tanahashi's first reign they did some serious damage to the IWGP Championship. The belt was vacated four times over that 5 year period due to various reasons. All of those came about because of who they picked to put the belt on or for doing dumb shit like having Nakamura fight an MMA match despite having no training. They did some real damage to the belt that I'm not sure the belt has recovered from yet.

I think the de-valuing becomes an issue when it trades hands so often because it doesn't seem to set a guy as the "man". Look at Flair as the champ. He would lose tag matches and what not occassionally but he still came out looking stronger than the guy who won the match.
A champion needs to be one of two things: 1. A Clean Cut Baby Face who overcomes anything and everything ethical and morale to remain champ and win the fan support 2. A Dirty Heel who does any and everything underhanded and cheating to remain champ and have the crowd want to kill him.
The only Exception to this rule is Steve Austin
