For several years Fedor was the TOP heavyweight in the world, bar none, and frequently the best pound for pound fighter going. I am sad to hear he lost. Sorry Lesnar marks, but old Brock was NEVER EVER in Fedor's class. Still holding out hope of a Fedor v. Couture fight.

I am not new to MMA. Great to see people checking out MMA no matter what. I'm not a member on Sherdog but that is probably for the best because the fanboys would rail on me for what I'm about to say - Fedor is tremendously overrated.
Don't get me wrong, he's a great fighter. One of the alltime greats. However, the Sherdog crowd that followed MMA before Forrest-Bonnar blew up the UFC like to think that they know all and Pride is the greatest thing ever because some annoying Japanese chick screamed the intros like a fucking moron.
FACT - He hasn't beaten anybody good in 5 1/2 years.
FACT - The guys he beat before that weren't able to do shit in the UFC. Yes, Nog lovers. Yes, Cro Cop lovers. It's true.
FACT - Fedor has had numerous occasions to test himself against the best and come to the UFC but instead fights washed up former UFC champions giving the sherdoggers more reasons to slurp his nuts.
I've never seen it posted before but my belief of why the Fedor myth is so great is that he looks like us (most of us). He's a guy who looks unassuming and a little flabby but he can fight awesome. Guys with his muscle definition (or lack thereof) think "Wow, Fedor can do this and he looks like my fat ass."
OK, I've rambled long enough.

FACT - The guys he beat before that weren't able to do shit in the UFC. Yes, Nog lovers. Yes, Cro Cop lovers. It's true. FACT - Noguiera was the best fighter in the WORLD when Fedor beat him. Cro Cop was still one of the most feared heavyweights on the planet when Fedor beat him. They were both in their prime, they weren't in UFC though Big Nog was Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion. That's like if Michael Jordan returned from retirement and didn't lead the league in scoring and saying, "Wow, that guy is terrible." I do think Fedor gets overrated by the diehard Sherdog crowd, but don't discredit the victories over Big Nog and Cro Cop just because of what happened years later. They were two of the best in the world at the time, and Fedor beat them both. Now, if you weren't trying to discredit the wins, then I misunderstood. Next MMA event I'm really looking forward to is the April Strikeforce event with the Overeem/Werdum and Barnett/Rogers fight. UFC 129 (GSP/Shields) looks good, too. EDIT And PRIDE was the best shit ever. DREAM has tried to fill the void, but to this point has failed miserably.

Just to throw my $.02 here, Fedor Emilianenko was the greatest fighter in this sports short history. His ability to strike with deadly accuracy, work in his judo/ sambo throws effortlessly, and dominate on the ground were second to none. He took the fight where he wanted it to go; he was comfortable in allstages of the fight- and it certainly did not matter where your strength was. He was great at imposing his will.
Was he overrated? Yes, yes he was. That was sort of his fault, too. In the UFC, those shows are all about two guys fighting and seeing who comes out on top. PRIDE was different- they certainly had great fights and fighters, but that sometimes played second fiddle to the show and spectacle. Fedor's record includes wins over CroCop and Nog, but it also includes fights over genetic freaks (Zulu, Hong Man Choi), pro wrestlers, and a few legitimate crossover athletes that did not have the MMA acumen to be in the ring at that high a level. Still, other fighters rever him, which to me means more than Sherdog nutswingers. Those guys, out of all of us, know when someone is good.
I speak in the past tense about Fedor being the bet because I do think his best days are behind him. Not saying he cannot come back and finish the next five fights with wins, but he has no fire for it anymore. He was quoted several years ago saying something to the effect of 'my opponent is keeping me from feeding my family. I cannot have that'. But it has been several years since then. He has reportedly been very smart with his money. he has beaten everyone put in front of him for nine years. Plus he has been fighting at the top level for a long time and he is not getting younger.

I really delved into Fedor's record this weekend and was a little surprised. Of all his wins maybe 5 or 6 were truly impressive. He had a habit of fighting big name guys about 2-3 years after their prime. If you compare his 31-2-1 to Couture's 20-10. I kind of find the Couture resume to be more impressive.
Really, there needs to be an adjustment to what people think of Pride fighters. Rua is about the only one to join the UFC and have real success.

I forgot Rampage. I don't really count the Spider as a Pride guy.

I know of names, just not much about their fights/history. That's the wonder of YouTube!

Hey UFC is where Anderson made his name, but Pride is where he got submitted by a flying leg lock.

I forgot Rampage. I don't really count the Spider as a Pride guy. I'd say Rampage has transitioned the best. The guy tore through 205 until he got to Forrest, and then well...it was all downhill from there. Forrest/Rampage was still a hell of a fight, though. One of the best in UFC history. My favorite UFC fight still remains a tie between Forrest/Bonnar from TUF Finale and Liddel/Wanderlei from UFC 79.

Do any of you buy MMA DVDs? I don't see myself ever doing that due to how late the show would come out. The Best of 2010, maybe. Also, do you purchase the PPVs or watch them through like Justin.tv for free?

Streams unless two guys I really like are fighting on the main card. The most recent MMA DVD I own is UFC: The Best of 2008, but I ordered UFC 117 today. Had no idea it was even out. The turnaround for UFC PPVs is about the same as WWE DVDs, two months or so.
