I thought this might be an interesting discussion. The top candidates are:
Lou Thesz - NWA World Heavyweight Champion, March to now.
or
the Destroyer - NWA World Heavyweight Champion for 6 weeks, current NWA International Champion and current NWA United States Champion.
The Destroyer currently has match of the year with William Muldoon but Lou Thesz has the runner-up against Andre the Giant. Year long match quality is probably a push with a slight edge to either guy justified.
Thesz is undefeated for the year and the Destroyer has lost maybe 2 matches if I looked at everything. Thesz has big wins over Buddy Rogers, the Destroyer, Andre the Giant, Rikidozan and the Crusher. The Destroyer has big wins over Mil Mascaras, Bobo Brazil, Bruiser Brody and Magnum TA.
So do you reward the sheer volume of championships that the Destroyer has amassed over the course of a single year or do you give it to the longevity of Lou Thesz?

Lou Thesz. World champ for 9 months is pretty good. Destroyer is pissed and the feud continues into next year.

I would say Thesz here, but I could see hoe Destroyer could get the nod of he had a lot for defenses. If Thesz had say only defend the belt like 6 times in 9 months and Destroyer had like 10 different defenses, then D gets the nod. Or if Thesz had some cheap retains (lost via dq or cor), but if he has been strong, reward him.

I think I'd pick Thesz for performance, but it might be more interesting for future booking to make it The Destroyer, than have him lord over Thesz and have a big feud to start the year.
