Amish survive Militia rally An incredible game that saw the Militia battle back from an 11-5 deficit only to fall short against the Amish 11-10. The Militia bats came to life, banging out 12 hits and belting four home runs. It wasn't enough as Tom Herr (1985 SLN) hit his first dinger of the year and Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) cleared the bases with a double and had four RBI. Cumberland Valley scored six runs in the third inning off Doc Medich (1975 NYY). Both teams had three errors that cost each squad two unearned runs on the night. Chris Nabholz (1991 MON) gave up five runs on six hits in five innings for the win, and allowed the first two home runs off him this season in 43 innings. Gene Garber (1978 ATN) gave up a double to Jack Clark (1987 SLN) in the ninth, but struck out Hack Wilson (HOF) and Tito Francona (1959 CLE) to end the game for his ninth save. Both teams had 12 hits in the game. There were five home runs, two triples and seven doubles between the two teams. Light-hitting Mickey Haslin (1934 PHN), playing in a backup role, went 3 for 4 with two doubles and his second home run of the year for the Militia. Baldy Louden (1914 BUF FL), Dick Allen (HER) and Clark also went yard for Fort McIntosh. Fort McIntosh has now lost six straight games after having put together a four-game winning streak. This was just the second time this season the Militia scored 10 or more runs in a game. They are 2-16 against the East and 8-20 versus the West, and 0-9 in one-run games. Surprisingly, the Militia are second in the league with 38 home runs. They have scored the second fewest runs (189) and are last in batting average (.236) and ERA (6.13). Elk County at LeHigh Valley
Whitey gives LeHigh walk-off win The consumate team player, known for his saying "Putting we ahead of I," Whitey Kurowski (1944 SLN) took it upon himself to give LeHigh Valley an 8-6 win over Elk County with a walk-off three-run homer. Kurowski cranked a two-run homer in the eighth to bring the Industrialists within one at 6-5. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) issued a two-out free pass to Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) with the tying run already on second base. Kurowski made him pay with a blast to leftfield, his eighth of the season. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) took the win to improve to 4-0 after working two scoreless innings of relief. Elk County outhit LeHigh 14-11. They had two errors that cost them three runs in the game. Red Murray (1910 NYG) and Walter Blair (1914 BUF FL) each had three hits for the Outdoorsmen. Turkey Island at Laurel
"Cheerful Charlie" lifts Highlanders to 4-2 win Charlie Hickman, also known as "Cheerful Hick" or "Piano Legs," used those legs with his bat to rip a pinch-hit two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to give the Highlanders a 4-2 win over Turkey Island. Joe Klink (1990 OAK) gave up three straight two-out hits that tied the game 2-2, the last being a single by Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) that dropped in front of centerfielder Moose McCormick (1909 NYG) to tie the game. Hickman came off the bench to smash a triple to take a 4-2 lead. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) worked the ninth for his 13th save. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) won his seventh against just one defeat this season, going eight innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts. Elmer Knetzer (1914 PIT FL) got a no-decision after going seven innings and giving up one run on seven hits. sabr.org/bioproj/person/3d537ba3Philadelphia at Allegheny
Higginson powers Phils to 8-3 win Bobby Higginson (1996 DET) connected for a 'big fly' with three RBI to lead the Phillies past the Indians 8-3. Walt Masterson (1953 WAS) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out 10. Higginson missed two weeks of the season due to injuries. In 22 games he's starting to get his bat going, hitting .301 with six doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) broke up the shutout with a three-run homer, his 10th, in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Beggs (1943 CIN) was charged with six runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in four innings and is now 1-6 on the year with a 6.38 ERA. Appalachian at Pittsburgh
Bucs edge Miners 2-1 Frank Smith (1909 CHA) and Stan Coveleski (HOF) locked up in an excellent pitching contest. The Pirates managed to bring two runs across in the fifth and collected a 2-1 win. Both of Pittsburgh's runs scored on ground ball force outs at second base. Tony Bartirome (1952 PIT) and George Susce (1944 CLE), the bottom two hitters, drove in the runs. Smith (4-7) went the distance, allowing one run on five hits. John Hummel (1909 BRO) plated the lone run for the Miners. Coveleski (3-7) also threw a complete game, giving up two runs on just four hits.

Rowan (1-4) grew tired after the eighth, but started the ninth and gave up a pair of hits. Gus Dorner (1906 BON) got an out but ended up walking a run home. Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) didn't have it on this night, giving up 14 runs -- nine earned -- on nine hits in five innings of work. The Phillies have won four in a row and are 5-1 on their current 13-game road trip. In those last four wins, they have scored 8, 10, 8 and 18 runs. Philly is now two games away from LeHigh to get out of the East division basement. LeHigh Valley also lost 18-0 to Delaware Valley just four days ago. Laurel at Allegheny
Indians ground Highlanders Matt Clement (2002 CUB) tossed an impressive five-hit shutout and the Indians knocked off the Highlanders 2-0. Clement (5-4) walked two and struck out nine. After allowing a hit and a walk to start the top of the ninth, he struck out Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE), Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) to end the game. Clement walked two and struck out nine, and leads the league with 72 Ks. It was 0-0 contest until two out in the last of the seventh. Cal Abrams (1954 BAL) connected for his first home run of the year to give Allegheny a 2-0 lead (it was a 1-2 HR split). On the losing side was Bert Humphries (1914 CUB).
