Turks top Minutemen 3-1 Rip Collins (1934 SLN) had two RBI and a solid outing from Pete Vuckovich (1978 SLN) added up to a 3-1 win for Turkey Island over East division-leading Delaware Valley. Vuckovich (7-4) went 7 1/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits. Vuckovich has won three straight starts, giving up four earned runs in 21 1/3 innings. Bressler silences Highlanders Rube Bressler (1914 PHA) pitched a complete game three-hitter and Elk County knocked off the Highlanders 2-1. Bressler (4-1) was brilliant in allowing only three hits, one run, two walks and three strikeouts. He had not won since April 26 going 0-1 with four no-decisions. Bressler is now fourth in ERA at 2.24. Don Hoak (1957 CIN) and Johnny Lush (1906 PHN) each drove in a run for the Outdoorsmen. Elk County scored two in the first and that was it. Smith shuts out Erie 4-0 Frank Smith (1909 CHA) worked a tidy four-hit shutout, Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) homered, and Pittsburgh blanked Lake Erie 4-0. Smith (7-8) sports a nifty 2.49 ERA for the year. He walked three and struck out five in throwing his second shutout of the season and sixth complete game. Bill Carrick (1901 WAS) threw well for the Mudpuppies, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. The Bucs sweep the four-game series with Erie. Allegheny at Fort McIntosh
Fort fends off Tribe attack 8-7 Fort McIntosh led 8-2 after seven innings but barely held on to beat the Indians 8-7. Dick Allen (HER) belted a three-run homer to pad the Militia's lead. Bill Robinson (1977 PIT) cranked a three-run shot for the Tribe in the ninth but Matt Karchner (1995 CHA) got the final out for his sixth save. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) went 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits for the win. Rowan (5-5) has won five of his last six starts. Rick Krivda (1995 BAL) was called back up to make the start and lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Appalachian at Cumberland Valley
Miners upend Amish 6-2 Cumberland Valley led 2-1 in the eighth inning but closer Gene Garber (1978 ATN) couldn't shut the door and the Coal Miners won 6-2. Bill Sherdel (1928 SLN) was in line for just his second win of the season after going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Hal Woodeschick (1964 HOU) was the winner with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Delaware Valley at Turkey Island
Vernon homer helps Minutemen win 4-3 Mickey Vernon (1953 WAS) belted a three-run homer and good pitching led to the Minutemen beating Turkey Island 4-3. Laurel power leads to 2-1 win Home runs by Stan Musial (HOF) and Ed Abbaticchio (1903 BON) was all the offense the Highlanders needed in a big 2-1 win over Elk County. Terry Mulholland (1993 PHN) and Mike Mussina (HER) for the Highlanders and Outdoorsmen respectively matched up in an excellent pitcher's dual. Mulholland (10-1) allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Mussina (5-5) gave up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. The Outdoorsmen loaded the bases with one out against Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) but failed to get home the tying run in the eighth. Roebuck completed the game for his 19th save. The teams split the four-game series and the Highlanders remain one game back in the West behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. LeHigh Valley at Philadelphia
Bullpens blow it, LeHigh wins 4-3 Both bullpens gave up the lead late in the game but it was Doug Clemens' (1964 CUB) two-run double off Mike Koplove (2002 ARI) in the top of the ninth that gave the Industrialists a 4-3 win over Philadelphia. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) allowed a two-run single in the seventh to John Knight (1910 NYY) that put the Phillies ahead 3-2. "Gunboat" guns down Mudpuppies Harry "Gunboat" Gumbert (1943 SLN) gave up just four hits and Jim Russell (1944 PIT) drove in five runs as Allegheny shutout Lake Erie 10-0. Gumbert (3-6) was helped out by two runners thrown out at home plate to keep the shutout intact. Gumbert walked two and fanned one and his ERA is now 3.95 after tossing his second shutout of the year. Russell hit his fourth home run, a three-run shot, and finished 3 for 3 with five RBI. Wally Kimmick (1925 PHN) was called up in some roster moves, started at second base, and went 3 for 3 with a triple, four runs scored and one run batted in. Gary Peters (1964 CHA) didn't have it this time out, being charged with six runs -- four earned -- on six hits in two innings of work for Erie. The Mudpuppies have lost seven in a row and Fort McIntosh has them in sight as the Militia try to climb out of the West division basement. Appalachian at Fort McIntosh
Miners stymie Militia 1-0 A great pitcher's dual was decided on a base hit by Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) in the eighth inning and the Coal Miners edged the Militia 1-0. Harry Dorish (1954 CHA) and John Burkett (1993 SFN) for the Miners and Militia respectively matched zeroes until the eighth. Dorish (4-0) went 8 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits. Joe Grzenda entered and got a double play to end the game for his 13th save. Burkett (5-8) allowed one run on 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings. Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) went 3 for 5 for Appalachian and leads the league with a .403 batting average. Philadelphia at Delaware Valley
Phils outlast Minutemen 7-5 Philadelphia slugged its way to an early lead and held on the rest of the way for a 7-5 win over East-division leading Delaware Valley. Mark Gubicza (1988 KCA) picked up the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Mike Koplove (2002 ARI) came on in the eighth but couldn't get through the ninth. Jack Meyer (1959 PHN) got the final out for his third save. John Smiley (1991 PIT) was called up to make his first start of the season for the Minutemen. The Phillies loaded up nine right hand batters and knocked the lefty around for seven runs on 12 hits in three innings of work. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) threw six innings of three-hit relief for Delaware Valley. Wid Conroy (1903 NYY) went 4 for 4 for Philadelphia. Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) hit his third home run of the year. The Phillies outhit the Minutemen 15-12. All nine Philly starters had a hit. Laurel at Cumberland Valley
Amish overcome Highlanders 5-4 As he did Sept. 17, 1968, to send the Detroit Tigers to the World Series, Don Wert singled to drive in the game-winning run for Cumberland Valley over the vaunted Laurel Highlanders. It was a great game that saw the Amish send Elmer Myers (1916 PHA) out to the mound for the first time this season, while Mel Queen (1944 NYY) made only his second start for the Highlanders. Cumberland's bullpen has not been getting the job done of late and this time it was Bruce Sutter (HER) once again unable to hold a lead. The Amish led 4-1 but the Highlanders scored three runs in the top of the eighth. Jim Spencer (1979 NYY) doubled in the bottom of the frame and Wert singled to score pinch-runner Tom Herr (1985 SLN) with the go-ahead run. Sutter was able to put the Highlanders away in order in the ninth for the win. Myers was charged with two runs on six hits, three walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. Queen allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) took the loss. Don Wert: sabr.org/bioproj/person/5dd914c9Pittsburgh at Turkey Island
McDowell zaps Turks 7-0 Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) threw a six-hit shutout and Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) hit two home runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates put away the Susquehannocks 7-0. McDowell (9-3) walked three and struck out 10 in throwing his fourth shutout of the year. McDowell brought his ERA down to 2.12. The lefty has won four straight starts and given up four runs in his last 32 innings. Surprisingly, this was his first 10 strikeout performance of the season. He is second in the league in strikeouts behind Matt Clement (109 - 99). Thomas hit his first two home runs of the year on April 28. He had not gone deep since then until hitting two more today. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 5 as Pittsburgh finished with 12 hits. Christy Mathewson (HOF) took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Davey Dunkle (1903 WAS) gave up four runs on four hits the last two innings. The Bucs have won five in a row and lead the West by two games. LeHigh Valley at Elk County
Milton blanks LeHigh in debut Eric Milton (2002 MIN) got the call up and made his first start of the year for the Outdoorsmen against LeHigh Valley. He faced the minimum and had allowed no hits for six innings before Carl Furillo (1953 BRO) broke it up. Herbie Moran drove in the only run of the night in the seventh and Elk County won 1-0. Milton faced Furillo in the ninth with two out and a man on first and got the ground ball to complete the shutout. He allowed three hits, two walks and struck out one in an impressive debut. Wade Miller (2002 HOU) took the tough loss. He went eight innings and gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts and falls to 2-8 on the year.

Terry Turner (1906 CLE) homered and was 3 for 5 for the Mudpuppies. Jim Owens (1959 PHN) falls to 3-9 for the season, allowing six runs -- three earned -- on four hits in five innings of work. The Mudpuppies are on an eight-game losing streak. Appalachian at Fort McIntosh
Fort wins slugfest 13-10 Hack Wilson (HOF) hit two home runs to help the Militia rally from being down 6-0 to beat the Coal Miners 13-10. Paul Foytack (1957 DET) gave up eight runs on 10 hits in five innings to take the loss. The Miners had four errors that cost them three runs. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) went 4 for 5. Hugh Jennings (HOF) was 3 for 6 with four RBI and Titus was 3 for 5 for Appalachian. The Miners outhit the Militia 19-17 and left 14 men on base. Philadelphia at Delaware Valley
Bullfrog jumps on Minutemen Bill "Bullfrog" Dietrich (1943 CHA) put the smackdown on the Minutemen with a complete game 4-2 victory. Dietrich (5-4) gave up a two-run single in the first inning to Reggie Jackson (HOF). Dietrich got out of the first with the help of a triple play. Dietrich allowed seven hits and now sports a 2.52 ERA after working his third complete game of the year. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) saw his nine-game winning streak come to an end. The lefty allowed four runs on 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings to fall to 10-3. Matlack had not lost since April 21 also against Philadelphia. Jeff Leonard (1984 SFN) homered for the Phillies while Jimmy Dykes (1925 PHA) and Bill Hinchman (1915 PIT) each had three hits. Scioscia 4-5-3 triple play & inj. Laurel at Cumberland Valley
Amish shock Highlanders in ninth Cumberland Valley came alive with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to shock the Highlanders and hand them a 4-3 defeat. Bill Phillips (1902 CIN) started the ninth by hitting Cliff Heathcote (1926 CUB) with a pitch and that brought Laurel closer Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) into the game. After an out, pinch-hitter Sid Bream (1986 PIT) walked and Tom Herr (1985 SLN) ran for him. With two out, Nellie Fox (HOF) singled to drive in one run. Greg Gross (1984 PHN) singled home the tying run. Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) had the day off but entered the game when Vic Wertz (1950 DET) was injured, and in his first at-bat singled to win the game. Roebuck (2-3) received his fifth blown save. Chris Nabholz (1991 MON) threw a heckuva game against the Highlanders, giving up three unearned runs in the top of the first and then none after that. Nabholz (6-3) was almost taken out a couple times but got out of trouble and was rewarded with the win in his first complete game of the year. He allowed 10 hits and six walks with six strikeouts. The Highlanders left 12 men on base. Pat Mullin (1941 DET) went 4 for 5 with two doubles in the losing cause. Pittsburgh at Turkey Island
Sauer homers twice in Bucs blow out Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) homered twice and drove in six runs as the Pirates demolished the Susquehannocks 12-0. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) was given the ball and he hurled 8 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. He had to leave in the ninth with an injury so Jim Shaw (1918 WAS) gave up a couple hits before preserving the combined shutout. Purkey (2-1) allowed only four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the rare start. Honus Wagner (HOF) went 4 for 6 with two RBI and Glenn Beckert was 3 for 6. Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) also homered giving him three in the last two days. Pat Malone (1928 CUB) gave up seven runs on nine hits in five innings for the loss. Turkey Island had five errors. The Bucs have won six in a row and they open up a three-game lead over the Highlanders in the West. LeHigh Valley at Allegheny
Furillo homers to win in 16th Carl Furillo (1953 BRO) went deep in the top of the 16th inning and LeHigh Valley edged the Indians 5-4 in the second longest game of the season in the Keystone State League. This was certainly a crazy looking game with not a lot of hitting, a bunch of errors and walks, that added up to a real barn burner. The Industrialists scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Tribe chipped away and led 4-3 in the ninth inning. A two-out triple by Al Spangler (1964 HOU) tied the game. Both teams saw some great relief pitching to send the game into the night. Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) threw four innings and Curly Ogden (1925 WAS) went three and got the win for the Industrialists. The two relievers combined to allow three hits and one walk in seven innings. For the Tribe it was Brian Holton (1988 LAD) giving up the tying run in the ninth. He went five innings, allowing one run on three hits. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) pitched four innings and gave up the one run on three hits to take the loss. The home run was the first given up by Leskanic this season in 26 2/3 innings. Tom Matchick (1969 DET) lined into a triple play in the top of the 15th inning. Charlie Wagner (1941 BOA) started for LeHigh Valley and went nine innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and five walks. Tim Conroy (1983 OAK) threw the first seven innings for the Indians and allowed three unearned runs, five hits, five walks and struck out six in seven innings. Furillo finished the game 3 for 8. Bill McKenchnie (1914 IND FL) went 3 for 6 for Allegheny. LeHigh left 15 men on base and Allegheny stranded 11.

I'm going to do something slightly different and highlight a series of importance or whatever reason I decree LOL. So the three-game set with Laurel at Pittsburgh will be featured with some background on the teams so far this season, stats, box scores, and a little longer writeup with more game and season notes on the players. Laurel at Pittsburgh (three-game series) Pirates lead Highlanders by four games in the West Season series: Laurel leads 5-2 Probable pitching matchups: Bob Moose (4-5, 4.66) vs. Frank Smith (7-8, 2.49) Terry Mulholland (10-1, 3.36) vs. Sam McDowell (9-3, 2.12) Bill Phillips (6-4, 3.50) vs. Bill Doak (11-2, 1.31) Versus Pittsburgh: Bob Moose 1-0, opponent avg .087 Terry Mulholland 1-0, opponent avg .286 Bill Phillips 1-1, opponent avg .136 Versus Laurel: Frank Smith 0-2, opponent avg .317 Sam McDowell 1-0, opponent avg .239 Bill Doak 1-1, opponent avg .281 Current: Pittsburgh 7-game winning streak, 8 of last 10 Laurel lost three in a row, 6 of last 10 Pittsburgh hitting .235 vs. Laurel Laurel hitting .284 vs. Pittsburgh Total scoring: Laurel 27, Pittsburgh 24 Three one-run games, Laurel is 2-1 one extra-inning game (Pittsburgh 5-4) Biggest wins: Laurel 8, Pittsburgh 2 Pittsburgh 9, Laurel 0 Battlin' Bucs trim Highlanders 3-1 In a well-pitched ballgame on both sides a home run by Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) put Pittsburgh on top for good in a 3-1 victory over the Laurel Highlanders. The Pirates are rolling on an eight-game winning streak while the Highlanders have now lost four straight and fall five games behind the Bucs in the West. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) took charge on the mound, going eight innings and surrendering just one run on a sacrifice fly by Barney McCosky (1941 DET) in the sixth. Smith (8-8) permited just six hits, walked one and struck out one, bringing his ERA down to 2.41. Smith has won three straight starts, giving up two runs the last 25 innings, and five of his last six decisions. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) handled the ninth for his 13th save. Miljus hadn't pitched in a week and has recorded the save in his last six outings. Bob Moose (1968 PIT) worked hard against his former team. Moose (4-6) fought his way through 7 2/3 innings, giving up 12 hits, one walk, and struck out a season-high 10. Moose has dropped his last two starts and is 1-5 his last six decisions. This is also the third time he allowed 12 hits in a game. Pittsburgh got on the board in the bottom of the second with singles by Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) and Thomas and a sac fly by Buddy Bell (HER). The Pirates had two men on in the fourth with singles by Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) and Bell but didn't score. The fifth saw the Highlanders threaten with a single by Charlie Hickman (1902 CLE) and Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) but Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) hit into a double play. In the bottom of the frame Scoops Carey (1902 WAS) singled and Honus Wagner (HOF) doubled with one out but Moose got out of the jam. Ed Abbaticchio (1903 BON) walked, went to third on Lou Klimchock's (1969 CLE) base hit and scored on a fly ball by McCosky to tie the game 1-1 in the sixth. Thomas homered in the bottom of the inning, his fourth consecutive day with a dinger and fifth in that span, to take a 2-1 lead. Wagner tripled in the seventh and Beckert brought him home with a base hit for an insurance run. Pittsburgh put two men on in the eighth with two out but Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) left them there. Miljus allowed a single to Hickman in the ninth but that was it.
