Yep, got it several years later on a comp of Brody stuff from All Japan Classics. WAY better video quality and it's the full match.

Watching Joe and Dean Malenko in All Japan, circa 1989. Updating a dvd comp I made about five years ago with at least 1 or 2 more disks.

Joe Malenko might be one of the most boring wrestlers to ever bore.

Decided after listening to Ric Flair on Austin's podcast that I wanted to revisit WCW.
Starting with the April 6th, 1985 episode of World Championship Wrestling and moving forward. Probably going to do an episode a week, maybe two if I can manage.
So we hit this episode and see Ole and Thunderbolt break up. Arn Anderson and Manny Fernandez meet up in our main event which leads to Arn and Ole beating the shit out of Manny and then Thunderbolt Patterson. They then form the new Minnesota Wrecking Crew
We get a very homoerotic hype video for Magnum TA.
God, I hate Jimmy Valiant and his feud with Paul Jones Army.
Tully Blanchard and Sam Houston had a nice little match on the show.

I like him a lot but he's not my personal pick for the best of that UWF/UWFI group. I think he's better than Maeda on a lot of days but my pick from that crop is either Minoru Suzuki, Yoji Anjo, Kazuo Yamazaki or Kiyoshi Tamura. Fujiwara's up there, too.

Seriously, I could watch Nikita Koloff destroy people for hours and never get bored.

I grabbed the 1985 set for Worldwide so I can get a bigger picture of the year. I'll grab 1986 when I start getting closer and try to get as much of the side shows as I can.

About to rewatch KENTA vs. Takashi Suguira from the day after Kobashi's retirement show. This match goes higher on my MOTY list every time I watch it, what are the odds on my last watch of the year it cracks the Top 5?! We'll find out today!

About to rewatch KENTA vs. Takashi Suguira from the day after Kobashi's retirement show. This match goes higher on my MOTY list every time I watch it, what are the odds on my last watch of the year it cracks the Top 5?! We'll find out today! A day late on this, and I've just rewatched it and here are my thoughts: I remember when I bought this show from IVP, it was purely for this match but I'll admit that I was skeptical going in. In terms of "big" or "epic" Japanese matches, the NOAH style has never quite 'done it' for me. I love 90s All Japan and the way they progressed the style pioneered by Jumbo and Tenryu in the late 80s, but once NOAH came to be I think they abandoned a lot of what made that style special in the name of topping what they'd done before. In small part, that meant riskier spots that involved head drops. Since the passing of Misawa, they traded in head drops for out and out head trauma, which has its own set of cons that I'm not particularly fond of, but you can't change these things. The first time I watched this match, I liked it. The second time I watched it, I really liked it. Today was my third watch of it, and I love this match. I love the main plot where KENTA knows he's the undersized champion and he has to bring twice the firepower that Sugiura does if he wants to stand a chance. The match unfolds beautifully, with KENTA breaking out everything he could (including multiple Go 2 Sleeps) and hoping for the best while Sugiura puts in half the effort, knowing that his size advantage and his sheer force could put the junior heavyweight down at any time. Korakuen digs this and really gets behind it. It's a bit of a long one, but it's well worth it. Here's the match:

Starcade 85 The Gathering
the Mid Atlantic Title - Krusher Kruchev beat Sam Houston. Sam Houston thought he won but Krushev had his foot on the ropes. Krushev came back to win with Houston's foot on the ropes unseen by the ref Mexican Death Match - Manny Fernandez beat Abdullah The Butcher after Abdullah hit the ringpost and Fernandez retrieved the Sombero Texas Bullrope Match - Ron Bass beat Black Bart with a cowbell. This match had the stipulation if Bass won he'd get a match against J.J Dillion Texas Bullrope Match - J.J Dillion beat Ron Bass after Bass accidentally hit the ref with the cowbell and Black Bart interfered Billy Graham beat The Barbarian by DQ after Paul Jones interfered - This had an arm wrestling contest immediatley before the match wth Paul Jones interfering as Graham was about to win NWA National Title Match - Buddy Landel beat Terry Taylor after interference by J.J Dillion NWA National Tag Title Match - The Andersons beat Wahoo Mcdaniel and Billy Jack Haynes retaining the title I Quit Steel Cage Match for NWA United States Title - Magnum TA beat Tully Blanchard for the title after using a broken table leg on Blancard's forehead Atlanta Street Fight - Jimmy Valiant and Miss Atanta Lively (Ronnie Garvin ?) beat The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette after Lively pinned Eaton Steel Cage Match for NWA World Tag Team Titles - Rock N Roll Express beat Ivan and Nikita Koloff winnng the titles after Morton pinned Ivan NWA World Title Match - Dusty Rhodes pinned Ric Flair despite interference by The Andersons. Decison later changed to win by DQ ( Andersons inerference) and Flair keeps the title
This was a pretty solid show despite all the specialty and stipulation matches. My favorite was the I Quit steel cage match and least favorite was Graham vs The Barbarian. I think this is probably the best Starcade of the Crockett years (83-88?) with 86 Night Of The Skywalkers being number two
