SLWC presents ‘Wrestling At The Chase’ Chase-Plaza Hotel; St Louis, Mo; 18 Dec 2008 [/center] 1. Tiger Jeet Singh def. Big RedTiger Jeet Singh makes short work of Big Red as he forces Red to submit to the Arabian Backbreaker. Tom Jenkins was in Singh’s corner during the match shouting out instructions to Singh. -Larry Matysik brings both Jenkins and Singh in the ring where he asks Jenkins if Singh is an ally of his. Jenkins responds saying they share a mutual hatred for Cactus Jack and will work together to rid St Louis of Jack once and for all.
When asked about SLWC fan Wildfire’s comment about this being an odd feud, Jenkins asked “Is this a feud? All I see is me proving old school shooters are better than today’s extreme crappy wrestlers. Besides, whose this cretin Wildfire anyway?”2. ‘Gentleman’ Tom Jenkins def. The GrapplerJenkins jumped Grappler to start the match but the Grappler hung in there and almost won the match with an European Cravat. The fans rallied behind the Grappler but Jenkins was able to soften his foe up with a Grinding Crossface before pinning Grappler with the Full Nelson Cradle. 3. Cactus Jack def. Brian LeeThis was a rematch from a couple of weeks ago where Brian Lee scored the upset win though he had help. However, this match was all Cactus Jack as he took the match to the floor and brutalized Lee. Back in the ring a Cactus Clothesline sets up the Double Arm DDT for the win. Afterwards, Tom Jenkins and Tiger Jeet Singh attack Cactus Jack. They leave Jack a bloody mess until, much to everyone’s surprise, Akira Maeda chases the heels off with a steel chair. 4. Akira Maeda dq The Great MutaA great battle between two Japanese wrestlers. Maeda gained the upperhand early with several rolling kicks and capture suplexes. Muta would come back and hit the Moonsault but Maeda is able to get a shoulder up just in time. Maeda is able to fire Muta into the turnbuckle and charges recklessly towards his foe. Muta spit’s the Red Mist at Maeda but Maeda ducks and the mist hit’s the referee, earning Muta a dq loss. -Afterwards, Larry Matysik asks Maeda why he saved Cactus Jack earlier in the show. Maeda responds through his interpreter that he may not like Cactus Jack but he respects him very much. He says he’ll stand besides Cactus in his battles with Tom Jenkins and Tiger Jeet Singh. 5. Rikidozan/Larry Zbyszko dq Ken Patera/Bill WattsIt was a tag battle pairing up two singles bouts from next week’s big card. Rikidozan and Larry Zbyszko started out strong early but the heels came back with cheating tactics. However, Dozan/Zbyszko would not be denied as Patera smashes Dozan with a stiff chair shot causing the dq. Dozan shrugged off the chair shot and chased Patera to the back. 6. Bruno Sammartino def. Waldo Von Erich in a wild non-title boutThe match was a blood-spilling, hard-hitting match. Waldo Von Erich more than held his own and used a foreign object often to spill Sammartino’s blood. WVE used the foreign object blatantly in front of the referee but Bruno stopped the ref from dqing WVE. Bruno started his comeback as he hit repeated Backbreakers before finally putting Waldo away with a Boston crab. The beating Bruno took isn’t going to do him any favors at the Bluegrass Brawl against AWA US champ, Jerry Lawler.

Toru TanakaApollo survives Tanaka’s cheating ways and Tanaka’s Shininomaki to win the opening match of the card. After surviving the Shininomaki, Apollo reverses a turnbuckle whip and catches Tanaka charging out with the Flying Dropkick for the win. 2. The Grappler def. Brian LeeThe fans have taken to the Grappler after his gutsy performance last week against Tom Jenkins. The Grappler, still not ready to give up his heel tricks, used his ‘loaded’ boot to dominate Brian Lee. Lee was out of it after 2 straight boot shots which led to a Grappler Swinging Neckbreaker for the finish. 3. Greg Valentine def. Scotty the Body This match came about after the two battle royale elimination scenarios a couple of weeks ago. Both wrestlers survived several pinfall attempts throughout the match. Scotty survived two Figure Fours and had the match won with the Piledriver, only to have Valentine drape his leg over the bottom rope. Late in the match, Valentine took the match to the floor where he wrapped Scotty’s legs around the ringpost in the Figure Four. Back in the ring, Valentine again uses the Figure Four on a weakened Scotty to get the submission win. 4. Larry Zbyszko def. Bill WattsThis match was made after Larry Zbyszko agreed to take the match for his friend and mentor, Bruno Sammartino. Bruno really wants to get his hands on Watts but is contractually bound to face Ted Arcidi tonight. Bill Watts controlled the early portions of the match but Zbyszko was able to expose the steel turnbuckle and use it to his advantage. Repeated head slams into the exposed turnbuckle had Watts a bloody mess. Zbyszko drills Watts with his second Piledriver of the match to take home a win. 5. Tom Jenkins/Tiger Jeet Singh def. Cactus Jack/Akira MaedaCactus Jack was ready to go against Tom Jenkins but Jenkins would have none of it as Tiger Jeet Singh started the match. Singh was the star of the match as he steamrolled both Jack and Akira Maeda. Jenkins tagged in only when Maeda was in the ring. Singh nailed Maeda with his sword hilt during a Jenkins hammerlock roll on Maeda. This allowed Jenkins to roll Maeda up for the win. 6. Rikidozan def. Ken Patera in a Falls Count Anywhere matchThis feud has been going on for almost two months. Their singles encounter last month ended in a countout win for Rikidozan. A win Dozan reluctantly accepts as he’s looking to decisively beat Ken Patera this time around. There’s even the rumor around the locker room that the winner will get the next shot at the Missouri title. The match started off as Patera attacks Dozan with his weight lifting belt but soon Dozan has the belt and gives Patera a dose of his own medicine. The bout goes to the floor where Patera busts Dozan open with several ringpost rams and a chair shot. Back in the ring, however, Patera gets leveled by a clothesline as he charges Dozan. A bloody Dozan starts lighting Patera up with his vicious Thunderous Chops to Patera’s chest. 3 straight Thunderous Chops sends Patera to the floor where Dozan nails Patera with a fourth Thunderous Chop to get the pinfall. 7. Bruno Sammartino def. Ted Arcidi to retain the Missouri titleTed Arcidi started out strong as Bruno was still showing some wear and tear from his battle with Jerry Lawler. Arcidi nearly wins the title after a press slam. Arcidi took the battle to the floor where he rammed Bruno into the ringpost. Back inside the ring, Bruno levels Arcidi with a powerful clothesline after catching Arcidi charging into the turnbuckles. Bruno quickly locks on the Bearhug to retain the title. Afterwards, Bruno shows the AWA US title and the Missouri state title off to the fans.

Sweetan misses a turnbuckle charge and eats a Taylor Five-Arm for the finish. 2. Paul Orndorff/Ted Arcidi def. Rikidozan/Larry ZbyszkoThe newly acquired Paul Orndorff beat Larry Zbyszko up. Rikidozan tried to help his partner out but Larry kept tagging himself in only to get more punishment. Orndorff ends this one with the Piledriver for the win. 3. Cactus Jack/Akira Maeda ddq ‘Handsome’ Tom Jenkins/Tiger Jeet SinghThe action was hot and heavy as it started before the opening bell was rung. Cactus Jack stalked Tom Jenkins after warding off a brutal attack from Tiger Jeet Singh. Akira Maeda was busted open badly after taking several shots from Singh’s sword hilt. Finally, the referee had seen enough and dq’ed both teams when they wouldn’t get back into the ring. Both teams were eliminated from the tournament. Afterwards, Maeda had to be taken to a local hospital to be stitched up. 4. The Midnight Express def. The BarrsSandy and Jesse Barr make their St Louis debut with a 1st round match against the reigning AWA US tag champs and perennially ranked, Midnight Express. Jim Cornette leads his charges into battle looking for more accolades to add to their already overflowing pile. The Barrs start off well enough but soon Cornette has the Barrs, the crowd, and the referee distracted. This allows Sweet Stan to blast Jesse Barr with Cornette’s tennis racket. Bobby Eaton follows with the Veg-O-Matic to advance. Cornette’s Express advance all the way to the finals. 5. Kamala w/ #1 Paul Jones def. Argentina ApolloKamala seemed to be distracted throughout the match as he was looking at the stage lights and the crowd. Apollo had long stretches of offense but could not capitalize. Kamala used an Ugandan Nerve Pinch to set-up the Big Splash for the finish. Afterwards, Paul Jones taunts the fallen Apollo. 6. Terry Taylor/Len Rossi def. Paul Orndorff/Ted ArcidiPaul Orndorff more than held his own against Taylor/Rossi. However, Arcidi was starting to show signs of an ailing back due to being trapped in Bruno Sammartino’s painful Backbreakers during last week’s match. Arcidi got trapped in a Len Rossi Boston crab for an extended amount of time. Somehow Arcidi got out of the move only to run into a Rossi Dropkick to seal the win for the fan favorites. 7. Dr Jerry Graham dq Eric The RedThe fans weren’t sure what to make of Eric the Red but they’re not fond of Jerry Graham either. Graham had problems throughout the match with Eric but managed to get several pin attempts. This frustrated Eric who grabbed his huge bone from ringside and beat Graham bloody with it causing the dq. 8. Gorgeous George def. Rick MartelThe fans were anxiously waiting to see and boo the antics of Gorgeous George. They weren’t disappointed as he came out to his theme music ‘Pomp and Circumstance.’ Georgie toyed with the crowd telling them as he looked at himself in his mirror that he was the fairest in the land. There was also speculation that Rick Martel would assume his ‘beautiful people’ role. George was able to fend off Martel with the timely help of Cherie Dupre and his Georgie pins. A frustrated Martel missed an arm drag and went flying out to the floor. Dupre helped Martel to his feet but yelled ‘watch out’ causing Martel to turn around right into a George flying bodypress. Back in the ring, Martel was easy prey for a Georgie Spinning Toehold. 9. Midnight Express def. Terry Taylor/Len Rossi to win the Archway CupOnce again, Jim Cornette was up to his old tricks as he helped his charges steal a win and the Archway Cup from Taylor/Rossi. Taylor started the match on fire as he chased both Sweet Stan and Beautiful Bobby from the ring. Cornette was able to save both his charges from certain defeat and turn the tide with a well-timed distraction. In the end, it was a Sweet Stan Superkick that put Len Rossi away. Afterwards, a gleeful Jim Cornette proclaimed during the trophy presentation that he was going to melt the big trophy down and have tag belts made; much to the chagrin of Sam Munchnick.

Bruno Sammartino def. Jerry Lawler to retain the AWA US titleThe highly anticipated rematch did not disappoint. Jerry Lawler controlled the early portion of the match frustrating Bruno Sammartino with his brawling style. Bruno mounts a comeback after Lawler misses a flying dropkick. Bruno goes on to score a nearfall after the Backbreaker and a near submission with the Bearhug. At this point, Bruno’s mortal enemy, Bill Watts comes down to ringside taunting Bruno. The ref chases Watts to the back but Lawler, ever the opportunist, throws a Fireball at Bruno. The Fireball glances off Bruno’s upper chest and arm but Bruno is able to kick out of Lawler’s pin attempt. Rick MartelPat Patterson jumped Rick Martel from behind during Martel’s match with Paul Orndorff leading to this match. Martel was able to shrug off a lot of Patterson’s offense throughout the match. Martel would go on long offensive runs but Patterson kept rolling to the floor to break up Martel’s momentum. However, an overzealous Martel tried a deathjump while Patterson was on the floor but crashed into the security railing as Patterson moved out of the way. Martel came up favoring his leg and Patterson took full advantage by locking in a figure four leglock to get the win. 7. Rikidozan def. Larry ZbyszkoRikidozan is not a happy man these days as he just can’t seem to win the big match to secure a shot at the Missouri title. Dozan’s temper flared throughout the match as he refused to break holds until just before the 5-count and even used a cheap shot to stave off a Zbyszko comeback. Dozan even knocks Larry through the ropes with his Thunderous Chops. Back in the ring, Dozan again hits his Thunderous Chops to get the win. Dozan got a healthy dose of boos throughout the match. Afterwards, Dozan hit Zbyszko again with his Thunderous Chops for good measure which brought Bruno out to the ring. A scuffle breaks out between Bruno and Dozan but it was quickly broken up by security. Bruno yells at Dozan as he helps Larry to the back. 8. Don Leo Jonathan dq Kamala w/ #1 Paul JonesThe big Mormon overmatched the Ugandan Giant; with both his agility and power. DLJ had Kamala running and Paul Jones bailed Kamala out on several occasions. DLJ hauled Kamala up for the Mormon Swing only to get attacked from Paul Jones from behind. Kamala dropped two Big Splashes on the prone DLJ after the match. 9. Andre the Giant def. Tiger Jeet SinghThe fans were clamoring to see Andre and were in awe when he finally walked out. To his credit, Tiger Jeet Singh never backed down but in doing so, he got thrashed. Tom Jenkins saved Singh from a Big Splash but got a big boot to the face that sent him flying to the floor. Andre hits another Big Splash on Singh to end this squash. 10. Bruno Sammartino def. Bill Watts to retain the Missouri titleBruno came out on fire in this match; obviously upset at Rikidozan’s actions earlier. Bill Watts got very little offense in as Bruno kept wearing the big Cowboy down with Bearhugs. Bruno catches Watts in a Boston crab to further weaken Watts’ back before locking in another Bearhug to retain the belt.

Bruno's still going to defend the Missouri title even though he's the world champion now? Something doesn't seem right about that. Did you think about holding it up?
