The (spoiler free) early review is in.
Brisoces and All Night Express put on a good match. However, I still don't think it made sense to have them in this number one contenders match coming off of the supposed big blowoff to the feud at the PPV. However, I can see why it was done because ROH basically painted themselves into a corner. The finish kept the losing team strong, though.
Elgin: keep in mind I've not been exposed to him much because until now I've had no way to consistently watch ROH. The guy is a physically gifted athlete with a great blend of power and surprising agility. HOWEVER, I cannot take that man seriously with that hair. It's not just bad, it's CANADIAN Bad. What possesses the men of that entire nation to do such awful things to their heads? Is the national bird the mullet? ROH needs a stylist to help some of these guys get rid of their really odd looks.
As far as the match goes, it made me a bigger believer in Eddie Edwards. I think it's fashionable in some circles to knock him and Davey for whatever reason, but the guy is as technically sound as they come. I could see a couple of spots where Elgin was lost and out of place during some spots but Edwards did not miss a beat and if you don't know what to look for you'd never catch it. A guy with less ring presence would have exposed Elgin to the "smark" call of "both! botch!" in a few places in that match. As it turned out it was a really solid match because of Edwards technical acumen and the fact that Elgin is gifted enough athletically to be carried through.
Another stylistic complaint: too many guys wearing "stuff over face" to the ring (scarves, facemasks, hooded jacket with face cover). Both Briscoes and Elgin did that going to the ring. If ROH has a producer or someone paying attention to stuff like that (and the aforementioned style police they desperately require) it would really help. I know it is supposed to be "entertaining sport, not sports entertainment" but presentation is still important. Guys with weird hair and bad gear or making the same type entrance in every match is going to hurt them in the long run by turning off the casual viewer.
Solid show, hour flies by unlike some shows where an hour seems like three. There's still room to grow, but it keeps me entertained for an hour and that's all I ask.

Comments about his hair (which I agree with) aside, you've given Elgin more credit in that one post than almost every other fan. Everyone says he sucks but really he's not bad at all. There are far worse guys in WWE/TNA. As far as the match goes, it made me a bigger believer in Eddie Edwards. I think it's fashionable in some circles to knock him and Davey for whatever reason I don't really see many people knocking Eddie, honestly. I think he's the better of the Wolves by a pretty wide margin. Just not a fan of Davey anymore. I heard Eddie/Elgin was a really good match and your review seemed to back that up. Can't wait to see that match tonight.

Elgin is only 24 years old. Saying he "sucks" at this point in the game is really premature. He's got the physical tools needed to be very good. People need to not be so hyper critical and just watch a guy develop.
After everyone else has had a chance to see this I will come back with one stylistic complaint I have with ROH. Nothing wrong per se, just something I don't personally care for.

Just watched the episode and I think this was the best of the four so far. I liked Briscoes/ANX but the finish was weird. Elgin/Edwards was good and there was only one move I noticed they screwed up and it was blown pretty bad. Inside ROH with WGTT had me rolling my eyes every time Charlie Haas talked. I like they way everything is presented with pre-match comments from people and the little Inside ROH stuff they do but the lighting needs to be fixed, it was pretty noticeably bad during Briscoes/ANX. Also, did they HAVE to do a full screen ROHWrestling.com ad DURING THE MAIN EVENT? I mean, put it at the bottom of the screen, don't obstruct the friggin' match to shill your website. A pretty solid hour of wrestling and that's all I ask of this show.

I really dig Elgin. You can see a lot of growth since his time in places like IWA-MS.

You saw one of my complaints, Switch. They cut to that website ad DURING the match. It was really weird. Lighting remains inconsistent but I will stand by the fact that I like the look and "feel" of the show. They're just a couple of minor fixes to having it right, I think.
As for my stylistic complaint, it's that too many guys do that "trade 101 stiff blows center ring" Japanese strong style thing. I think I've seen at least one example of it on every show. At some point I just want to yell "would one of you guys sell one of these and move on with the match?!" But again, that's not a knock on anything, just something I don't personally care to see.

You're going to see it every show so get used to it. Indy guys love doing that puro shit and making you hate it.

Indy guys love doing that puro shit and making you hate it. It doesn't bother me when some guys do it, but then there's a lot of guys who don't have any reason doing it and it makes me want to throw a desk through a window.

Promo for this week. This is from the 10/5 taping which from all the live reports was apparently really great. Looking forward to next week more since I think that's the episode with Roderick Strong vs. Kyle O'Reilly.

Thought this episode was alright. The Davis Arena definitely looks better than the Frontier Fieldhouse did as far as the lighting setup, etc. Bennett/Lethal was decent and TJP/Mondo was what it was. Next week should be fun since it has Strong/O'Reilly and ANX/Briscoes 59375831798735 to see who jobs to WGTT at Final Battle.

I'm up to episode two. I've just paused at Lethal/Generico. So far, I have enjoyed each show. I don't feel bored at all, which wrestling has made me since WWE took the title off Punk. I only watch ROH on occasions, but this may change. I really like the tag team division, and I'm ready for Edwards to get the title back. What would be nice is if one day this could go live; however, the streaming/production/lights suck huge balls.
Lethal and Generico was very good, but going past the time limit on a small TV show was a bad call.

Preview for this week. As good as these matches are, they desperately need to stop having them.

My spoiler-free thought for the week:
- I don't like Kyle O'Reily. He may be an okay guy, his parents may really think he's great, but that's not what I mean. I mean his shadow boxing/draw in shoulders and throw jerky knuckle punches pre-match routine looked like amateur MMA night at the local bar stuff, which is kind of what his overall persona screams to me. That weird green mouthpiece he wears makes it look like he's got stained "Bubba teeth" the way it shows up on screen, too. He's one of those guys who does a hundred moves and a lot of them look nice, but doesn't make any of them matter.
- They sure feature Haas and Benjamin in a lot of promos. I don't think I've seen any less than two a show the entire time. Sometimes they're entertaining and sometimes they just miss the mark. They do their best talking in the ring, I think.
- Ciampa is The Embassy's Erick Stevens 2.0. ROH can talk him up all they want, but for some reason all I ever think when I see him is "Erick Stevens 2.0". And someone still needs to buy him some trunks that fit. His opponent Silva needed to quit doing that weird thing with his tongue. It looked like a nervous tick or something.
- I agree the Briscoes versus ANX has run its course. It was a good match, though. I believe losing Hero and Claudio right as they got the TV deal hurt them quite a bit and left them scrambling for a new plan in the tag team division, which is why we've seen two TV matches between these teams since the "blow off" at the PPV.
Overall, it was an average show. Nothing to get too excited about, but they can't all be great.
