Indians pick up Musselman from DV
Teams continue to try and find ways to make even small improvements. Allegheny County shipped backup third baseman Charlie Deal (1915 SL FL) to Delaware Valley for starting pitcher Jeff Musselman (1988 TOR).
The Indians are fighting to reach .500 playing in the tough Western division. Musselman has not played this season for the East-leading Minutemen and will move right into the starting rotation for the Tribe. This gives Allegheny a lefthander to start and lets them send Dave Freisleben (1977 SDN) down to the minors.
Delaware Valley needed someone to give Buck Weaver a little rest at third base. Deal has played 19 games for the Indians, hitting .200 with three doubles and three RBI.

Minutemen execute another deal
Delaware Valley worked out another small deal as it tries to maintain first place in the East. The Minutemen send catcher Jack Lapp (1915 PHA) to Elk County in exchange for shortstop Billy Hunter (1954 BAL).
Hunter is projected to become the everyday shortstop for the Minutemen. He saw playing time in only three games for the Outdoorsmen, going 1 for 9 at the plate (.111).
Lapp appeared in four games for Delaware Valley, batting .308 with a home run and two RBI. Elk County will give him playing time behind the plate as well as some work at first base.

Pittsburgh at AppalachianMcDowell too much for Miners Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) nearly shut out the Coal Miners but the Pittsburgh Pirates had little trouble in winning their 17th straight game 4-1. McDowell (11-3) lost his shutout bid in the ninth after a triple by Danny Litwhiler (1941 PHN) and a single by Sparky Adams (1926 CUB). McDowell allowed eight hits and struck out five, seeing his ERA drop to 1.98. McDowell has won six straight starts with two shutouts and three complete games in that span. Buddy Bell (HER) hit his seventh home run for the Bucs and drove in two. Paul Foytack (1957 DET) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings for the loss. LeHigh Valley at Turkey Island
Matty completes 5-2 win Christy Mathewson (HOF) made it to the end in a 5-2 win for Turkey Island over LeHigh Valley. Mathewson (10-6) struck out eight in the complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits. He gave up a triple, a run, and hit two batters in the ninth but stayed in to finish the job. Matty collected his 10th win on his fourth try and now has an ERA of 1.95. Clyde Barnhart (1925 PIT) went 2 for 3 with four RBI for the Susquehannocks. Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) gave up four runs on five hits in six innings, with six strikeouts, in taking the loss. Outfielder Pat Kelly played his first game for the Susquehannocks, walking twice, stealing two bases and scoring a run. Elk County at Delaware Valley
Elks edge Minutemen 4-3 John Ward (HOF) went 4 for 5 with two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases to help Elk County get by Delaware Valley 4-3. Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) pitched eight innings for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) allowed two hits in the ninth but got his 13th save. Jamie Moyer (2002 SEA) fell to 4-7 overall, giving up three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Newcomer Charlie Deal (1915 SL FL) went 1 for 4 for the Minutemen. Delaware Valley's winning streak ended at seven games. Laurel at Fort McIntosh
Huge ninth gives Laurel blow-out win A seven-run ninth made this one a laugher in a 10-0 win over Fort McIntosh. Nellie Fox (HOF) and Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) hit home runs early in the game for the Highlanders. Don Shaw (1971 SLN) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Militia, but George Susce (1957 BOA) gave up seven runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks in the ninth. Bert Humphries (1914 CUB) threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, giving up six hits for the win. Bobby Locke (1960 CLE) got out of trouble in the eighth and handled the ninth for his fourth save. Doc Medich (1975 NYY) fell to 5-11 on the year with 5 1/3 innings of work and allowing three runs on nine hits. Allegheny at Lake Erie
Tribe manage 3-2 win There wasn't much in the way of offense but the Indians managed to score enough to beat Lake Erie 3-2. Dave Wickersham (1964 DET) went eight innings for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits. Ron Kline (1968 PIT) picked up his 14th save. Jeff Musselman (1988 TOR) made his first start of the year after being acquired from Delaware Valley. He gave up three runs on six hits in six innings. A two-run double by Bones Ely (1902 WAS), who entered after an injury to Joe Dugan (1926 NYY) proved to be the difference in the game. Philadelphia at Cumberland Valley
Bell bangs two homers, Amish beat Phils 9-8 Les Bell (1926 SLN) hit two home runs and had four RBI to give Cumberland Valley a 9-8 win over Philadelphia. Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit his 15th home run and drove in three for the Amish. Cumberland Valley sent five pitchers to the mound to somehow come away with a win. Starter Chris Nabholz (1991 MON) left after 1 2/3 innings with an injury for the Amish. Bill Sherdel (1928 SLN), George Winter (1906 BOA) and Jim Todd (1975 OAK) got the ball to Gene Garber (1978 ATN) for his 13th save. Joe Shaute (1928 CLE) took the loss in his debut for the Phillies. Covelski ends Pirate streak Harry Coveleski (1916 DET) shut down the Pirate offense and the 2-1 win by the Miners ended Pittsburgh's winning streak at 17 games. Coveleski (10-5) did give up nine hits and the one run scored in the first on a double by Honus Wagner (HOF) and a single by Bobby Wallace (HOF). Coveleski went eight innings and Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) put his 17th save in the books. Ron Northey (1944 PHN) hit a two-run homer, his 11th, in the third off Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) and that was all the offense for the Miners. Purkey (4-2) threw seven innings and allowed seven hits. LeHigh Valley at Turkey Island
Frankhouse too much for LeHigh Fred Frankhouse (1934 BON) threw a complete game for just his second win of the year in a 9-2 final for Turkey Island over LeHigh Valley. Frankhouse (2-5) allowed seven hits and four walks. It was his first win since May 5. Danny Taylor (1934 BRO) went 4 for 4 with three doubles and three RBI. Mickey Doolan (1910 PHN) also had three RBI. Wade Miller (2002 HOU) dropped to 2-10 on the year, allowing seven runs on eight hits in five innings. Manto hits two, DV wins 9-5 Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) belted two home runs and Delaware Valley pulled away for a 9-5 win over Elk County. Manto had three RBI with Reggie Jackson (HOF) and Roy Thomas (1903 PHN) each driving in two runs. The Minutemen out hit the Outdoorsmen 14-7. Jon Matlack (1978 TEX) allowed four runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings to get the win and stand at 12-3 for the season. Lew Richie (1906 PHN) recorded his second save. Rube Waddell (HOF) permitted five runs on 10 hits in six innings and falls to 7-10 overall for the Elks. John Ward (HOF) went 3 for 5 with three runs and three stolen bases. Laurel at Fort McIntosh
Fort powers to 5-4 win Jack Clark (1987 SLN) blasted a two-run homer in the last of the eight off Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) and Fort McIntosh put down the Highlanders 5-4. The lead changed hands five times with each club belting two home runs. Ken Griffey Jr. (HER) and Bob Bailor (1977 TOR) for Laurel and Clark and Tony Rensa (1930 PHN) for Fort McIntosh. It was the seventh blown save for league-saves leader Roebuck (21). Willie Adams (1918 PHA) got his first win with 1 1/3 innings of relief and Matt Karchner (1995 CHA) got his eighth save. Allegheny at Lake Erie
Big inning gives Erie 7-2 win Lake Erie scored seven runs in the second off Bob Priddy (1968 CHA) and that gave them a 7-2 win over Allegheny. Joe Collins (1952 NYY), Jack Dunn (1901 BAL) and Carl Sawatski (1961 SLN) each had two RBI. Bill Carrick (1901 WAS) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits for the win. Two of his three wins have come against the Indians. Philadelphia at Cumberland Valley
Amish score 8-7 win Horrible relief pitching highlighted this one but a four-run eighth gave Cumberland Valley an 8-7 win over Philadelphia. The lead changed hands five times. The Phillies went ahead with a four-spot in the seventh. Brook Jacoby (1987 CLE) homered for the Phils and Jimmy Sheckard (1901 BRO) went deep for the Amish. Bruce Sutter (HER) blew his fifth save but got the win with Gene Garber (1987 ATN) managing to get save #14. Mike Koplove (2002 ARI) blew his sixth save for the Phillies. Erie and Cumberland do business
Lake Erie and Cumberland Valley agreed to terms on a one-player deal. The Amish Men send first baseman/infielder Russ Wrightstone (1927 PHN) to the Mudpuppies for shortstop Terry Turner (1906 CLE).
Turner has played in 64 of the 77 games for the Mudpuppies and is batting .256 with four doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI. Filling the void at short for Erie will be Bones Ely (1902 WAS) and Alan Strange (1934 SLA).
The Amish will use Wrightstone in a number of positions. He can spell Joe Collins at first base and will likely play at second, third and designated hitter as needed. Wrightstone played in 23 games for Cumberland, batting .267 with one double and seven RBI.

East bottom-dwellers make trade
The two teams fighting each other to stay out of last place in the East have consumated a trade. The Philadelphia Phillies give second baseman Pat Kelly (1993 NYY) and outfielder Dick Harley (1902 DET) to LeHigh Valley for second baseman Eddie Stanky (1949 BON).
Stanky has been one of the few bright spots this season for the Industrialists. In 64 of the 77 team games Stanky is hitting .256 with seven doubles, two triples, a home run and 21 RBI. He brings a .373 on base percentage to the Phillies and has made only three errors at second base. Stanky also leads LeHigh Valley in runs scored with 41.
The Phillies gave up a pair of players that have been in the minors for them. Kelly had played in only one game and went 0 for 3. Harley saw some time in 17 games early in the season, batting .182.
Philadelphia will put Stanky into the lineup at second base and move Jimmy Dykes to third. The defense will be improved and the current plan is to platoon Brook Jacoby and Harry Davis at first base.
LeHigh Valley is happy to insert Kelly at second where the defense is expected to remain about the same and he'll bring some added speed to the lineup. Harley gives them a much needed outfielder and he will likely see a lot of playing time and may even take over in centerfield.

Ron Kline (1968 PIT) got the win with three innings of relief. Joe Beggs (1943 CIN) threw three innings for the loss. Philadelphia at Cumberland Valley
Herr home run helps Amish win Tom Herr (1985 SLN) hit his fourth home run of the year and went 3 for 5 to lead Cumberland Valley over Philadelphia 8-5. George Winter (1906 BOA) got the win, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Jim Todd (1975 OAK) threw 2 1/3 for his fifth save. Walt Masterson (1953 WAS) gave up six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings and is now 4-6 on the year with a 6.14 ERA. Tribe stun Highlanders with comeback Lance Parrish (HER) homered to tie the game and Bill McKechnie (1914 IND FL) plated the game-winning run in walk-off fashion and the Indians knocked out the Highlanders 7-6. Allegheny scored two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to win it. After Parrish's seventh home run of the year, a two-out jack, tied the game, Joe Harris (1925 WAS) was hit with a pitch. Klondike Douglass (1902 PHN) ripped a single and then McKenchine won it with another base hit off Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN). It was the eighth blown save for the league-leader Roebuck. Gary Ross (1969 SDN) was great in relief, throwing five two-hit, scoreless innings to get the win. The five shutout innings lowered Ross' (3-2) ERA to 4.88. The Indians outhit Laurel 17-14 and both teams left 12 men on base. Parrish finished 3 for 5 with three RBI. Jim Russell (1944 PIT) also went 3 for 5 and McKechnie and Tom Daly (1901 BRO) both had two RBI. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) had three hits for Laurel with Ken Griffey Sr. (1977 CIN) and Doc Gessler (1909 BOA) both adding two RBI. Allegheny overcame three errors that made three of Laurel's runs unearned. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley
Amish pile up late runs for 11-5 win Cumberland Valley scored nine runs in its last three at-bats to put away LeHigh Valley 11-5. Tom Herr (1985 SLN) had four RBI and Birdie Cree (1910 NYY) went 4 for 5 with a double, triple and two RBI. Ken Raffensberger (1951 CIN) lasted long enough to get his 11th win, giving up five runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Jim Todd (1975 OAK) went 2 2/3 of hitless relief for his sixth save. Charlie Wagner (1941 BOA) left after 4 2/3 innings. It was Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) taking the loss. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) was charged with five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. Dick Gernert (1956 BOA) hit his fourth home run for the Industrialists and Buck Freeman (1901 BOA) was 3 for 5. Delaware Valley at Pittsburgh
Minutemen top Bucs 3-2 Delaware Valley shut down the Pirates' offense and took a 3-2 victory. Lew Krausse (1968 OAK) was sharp, allowing two runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) finished for his 20th save. Reggie Jackson's (HOF) 21st home run tied the game 1-1. Buck Weaver (1918 CHA) and Billy Gilbert (1901 MLA) each drove in a run for the Minutemen. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) pitched into the ninth for Pittsburgh but the loss evens his slate at 9-9. He allowed three runs on 12 hits and struck out seven. Pittsburgh has lost three in a row since winning 17 straight. The Bucs have just four runs the last three games. Elk County at Appalachian
Miners drop Outdoorsmen A three-run homer by Bill Coughlin (1902 WAS) proved to be the difference as Appalachian downed Elk County 8-6. Sparky Lyle (HER) came in and gave up the long ball to cap a five-run frame for the Miners, after the Elks had just scored four runs. Stan Coveleski (HOF) took the win and Joe Grzenda (1971 WAS) the save. Rube Bressler (1914 PHA) went just four innings and received the loss. Turkey Island at Fort McIntosh
Big innings give Militia 12-5 win Fort McIntosh scored three in the first, four in the fourth and five in the sixth as they romped over the Susquehannocks 12-5. Jack Rowan (1910 CIN) pitched a complete game, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. Emmett Heidrick (1901 SLN) went 3 for 5 with four RBI. The last four hitters in the lineup -- Tom McCreery (1901 BRO), Pete Suder (1949 PHA), Mickey Morandini (1995 PHN) and Tony Rensa (1930 PHN) comibined for 10 hits and four RBI. Tribe trip Highlanders 7-6 In a great back and forth contest the Indians came away with a 7-6 win over the Laurel Highlanders. Curt Leskanic (1995 COL) almost let it slip away in the ninth. With runners on the corners and two out Dick Groat (1960 PIT) made a great play in the hole at short to throw out Barney McCosky (1941 DET) and end the game. Brian Holton (1988 LAD) went 2 1/3 innings of three-hit relief for the win. Leskanic got his 10th save. All nine Indians had a hit in this one with six different players driving in a run. Lance Parrish (HER) hit his eighth home run of the year for the Tribe. Steve Swetonic (1930 PIT) took the loss for Laurel, allowing two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings in relief of Bruce Dal Canton (1972 KCA). Stan Musial (HOF) went 4 for 4 with his 20th home run and two RBI. Doc Gessler (1909 BOA) was 3 for 4. The Highlanders left 13 men on base. LeHigh Valley at Cumberland Valley
LeHigh burns Amish in 11 LeHigh Valley came back from a 5-0 deficit to force extra innings and then drop the Amish Men 6-5 in 11. Joe Boley (1930 PHA) doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th after Gene Garber (1978 ATN) had walked two batters in a row. Cumberland Valley loaded the bases in the last of the 11th but Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) got Vic Wertz (1950 DET) to hit into a 6-2-3 double play to end the game. Pat Kelly (1993 NYY), one of the new additions to the Industrialists, went 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBI. DeLucia got his 16th save with Bob Heffner (1964 BOA) making a rare relief appearance and getting the win, going 1 1/3 innings. Les Bell (1926 SLN) hit two home runs and drove in four for the Amish. Garber fell to 4-6 for the year. Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) threw four innings of two-hit relief for LeHigh, while Bruce Sutter (HER) allowed one run on two hits in four innings for the Amish. Cumberland Valley is still an impressive 19-9 in one-run games this season. LeHigh Valley is 5-0 in extra innings and 14-13 in one-run games. Delaware Valley at Pittsburgh
Caldwell pitching sinks Bucs Ray Caldwell (1914 NYY) kept the Pirates' offense from doing much of anything and Delaware Valley won 4-1. Caldwell (10-6) gave up a solo homer to Dick Allen (HER) in the seventh. He allowed only four hits for the game. Caldwell has won three in a row, all of which were complete games. Mike Piazza (HER) and Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) each hit two-run homers off Sam McDowell (1968 CLE). The Pirate lefty also only gave up four hits and struck out six as his personal six-game winning streak came to an end. Pittsburgh has lost four straight after winning 17 in a row. They still lead the Highlanders by nine games in the West. The Minutemen lead the East by six games. Elk County at Appalachian
Walsh traps Outdoorsmen Ed Walsh (HOF) went the distance and Jake Daubert (1914 BRO) drove in three runs as the Coal Miners caged the Outdoorsmen 8-1. Walsh (12-9) allowed just three hits on the day, one being a run-scoring triple by Jack Lapp (1915 PHA). Lapp also had three of the four errors by Elk County. After 21 starts by Walsh he still does not have a no-decision. Sparky Adams (1926 CUB) and Bill Coughlin (1902 WAS) each had three hits for the Miners. Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY) allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings and does not get his 10th win of the year. Appalachian has won four in a row while Elk County has lost four in a row. Turkey Island at Fort McIntosh
The Fort pulls out win ninth Fort McIntosh scored two runs after two were out in the bottom of the ninth to beat Turkey Island 3-2. Stan Belinda came on to preserve the 2-1 lead for the Susquehannocks. He struck out the first two batters but Mike Menosky (1917 WAS) and Baldy Louden (1914 BUF FL) singled to put runners on the corners.
