The Miners have won four straight and the Phillies have lost four in a row. Appalachian is now 2 1/2 games behind East leading Delaware Valley. Fort McIntosh at LeHigh Valley
Fort topples LeHigh 9-1 A seven-run top of the ninth inning turned a 2-0 game into a blowout and Fort McIntosh beat LeHigh Valley 9-1. Joe Cascarella (1934 PHA) pitched into the ninth before tiring and the Industrialists down 2-0. His bullpen did nothing for him, allowing his two runs in plus five more. Frank Hoerst (1941 PHN) allowed three runs and didn't get an out. Marty O'Toole (1914 PIT) gave up two more. Emmett Heidrick (1901 SLN) went 3 for 5 with two RBI. Art is Howe Elks win in 13 Art Howe (1978 HOU) hit a two-out double to score Ossee Schreckengost (1902 PHA) in the bottom of the 13th inning to give Elk County a 4-3 win over Delaware Valley. The double was Howe's only hit in a 1 for 6 day but he came through to win the game off Herb Pennock (HOF). Elk County outhit Delaware Valley 16-9. Both teams had two errors that cost each squad one unearned run earlier in the game. Fielder Jones (1901 CHA) went 3 for 5 with two stolen bases for the Outdoorsmen. Sparky Lyle (HER) picked up the win with three innings of one-hit relief. Mike Ryba (1944 BOA) allowed two earned runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings for a no-decision. Lake Erie at Cumberland Valley
Wertz whacks, Amish win Vic Wertz (1950 DET) hit a two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie and the Amish Men went ton to beat the Mudpuppies 7-1. A four-run bottom of the eighth gave the Amish some breathing room. Harry Seibold (1930 BON) gave up four runs on five hits in two innings of relief for the Mudpuppies. King Lear (1915 CIN) was given his first start of the year, his first appearance for that matter, and allowed one run on seven hits in six innings for the win. Bruce Sutter (HER) gave up four hits in three innings for his sixth save. Jack Harper (1901 SLN) allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings and is now 2-9 on the year. Lake Erie left 13 men on base and have lost five in a row. Pittsburgh at Laurel
Highlanders sink Pirates 3-1 Bill Phillips (1902 CIN) carried a shutout into the ninth and the Highlanders took a much-needed 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Phillips (8-5) allowed one run in the top of the ninth. He went 8 2/3 innings and gave up only three hits. Phillips is 2-2 against the Pirates. Ed Roebuck (1964 PHN) got his 23rd save. Rich Rollins (1964 MIN) and Stan Musial (HOF) hit solo home runs to give Laurel the runs they would need to win. Frank Smith (1909 CHA) once again didn't get the run support as he allowed three runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings and stands at 9-10 in 22 starts for the year with a 2.61 ERA. Mathewson (10-8) gave up six runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits in six innings. Matty has lost two in a row and four of his last five starts. Elk County at Pittsburgh
Elks snip Bucs in 11 A two-out base hit in the top of the 11th by Ossee Schreckengost (1902 PHA) drove home Don Hoak (1957 CIN) and Elk County grabbed a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a great pitcher's dual between Pittsburgh's Sam McDowell (1968 CLE) and Elk County's Bob Shawkey (1916 NYY). Both teams elected to leave their starters in past the ninth inning. McDowell (11-6) went 10 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on just four hits while walking five and striking out 14. Johnny Miljus (1927 PIT) came in and gave up the hit to Schreckengost. Shawkey (11-7) went 10 innings and allowed one run on a mere three hits while walking four and striking out four. Doug Brocail (1998 DET) then closed for his 16th save. Matlack went eight innings before loading the bases with no out in the ninth. Matlack ended up charged with two runs on five hits. Bris Lord (1910 PHA) went 3 for 3 with two RBI for the Minutemen. Jeff Manto (1995 BAL) was 2 for 5 with three RBI. Eddie Plank (HOF) took the loss, giving up eight runs -- four earned -- on 14 hits in eight innings. LeHigh Valley at Lake Erie
LeHigh tags Erie in ninth A three-run top of the ninth broke a 1-1 tie and LeHigh Valley took a 4-1 win over Lake Erie. This one was a real good pitching confrontation. Bill Carrick (1901 WAS) for Lake Erie and Curt Simmons (1952 PHN) for LeHigh. Carrick (3-9) worked into the ninth but was charged with four runs on 12 hits. Simmons (9-7) threw eight, allowing one run on four hits and struck out six. Rich DeLucia (1995 SLN) got his 18th save. The Industrialists had 14 hits and left 10 men on base. Elk County at PittsburghHank "Sours" Outdoorsmen Hank Sauer (1954 CUB) homered and drove in five runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates romped 10-4 over Elk County. Sauer hit a three-run homer, his 26th, and added two sacrifice flies. Sauer is tied for the league lead in RBI at 80 with Ken Griffey Jr. and Reggie Jackson. Glenn Beckert (1971 CUB) and Frank Thomas (1954 PIT) each had two RBI. Bob Purkey (1961 CIN) went six innings for the win and is now 7-2. He allowed four runs on eight hits. Militia barely survive 10-9 Philadelphia scored eight runs in the bottom of the ninth but still came up short against Fort McIntosh 10-9. It was a ridiculous last of the ninth as the Militia sent four relievers to the mound to try and end the game. Exposition Park: 1891-1909 Home to the Allegheny County Indians This old ball park was on the city's north side, very near the current site of Three Rivers Stadium. The Home Plate location was in the Three Rivers Stadium parking lot mid-way between Gate B and C and the Clark Bar & Grill. It was on the river side of the General Robinson Street extension, and on the stadium side of the Fort Duquesne Bridge. Local SABR members surveyed the site and, at one time, marked the approximate home plate location with white paint (in the shape of a home plate). In fact, all the base locations are marked with white paint. Home plate was in a parking space, and many times, was covered with a parked car. The other bases were easily seen even when the lot was in use. In September 1998, a state-sponsored historical marker commemorating the first modern World Series was dedicated on the old ballpark site. The plaque was put into storage when Three Rivers Stadium was imploded in 2001. Stay tuned here for future developments. The site was actually the home to three versions of Exposition Park: the lower field (1882), the upper field (1883), and Exposition Park III (1890). In 1875, the first Allegheny Exposition was held in a hall on the flats along the north shore of the Allegheny River. The Exposition's goals were to promote Pittsburgh, display local products, and to provide some entertainment. In addition to the hall, there was some open space where horse races, circuses, and concerts were held. The American Association Alleghenies played baseball games here, in these open fields, starting in 1882. The Upper Field was hastily created when the lower field (closer to the river) flooded in 1883. Tired of the ballfields on the flood plain, the Alleghenies moved to higher ground at Recreation Park in 1884 (see above). The exhibit halls on this Exposition Park site burned down in 1883 and were later rebuilt across the river on the Point. With the North Side site now largely unoccupied, the new Players League built Exposition Park III very near the current site of Three Rivers Stadium in 1890. The Player's League folded after just one season, and the National League Pirates moved into Expo III in 1891. Most notable events: Exposition Park was the National League host for the first World Series in 1903. The Allegheny River flooded on the 4th of July 1902; more than a foot of water covered large parts of the outfield. It was the perfect time for a double header as the Bucs took on Brooklyn. A special ground rule was created: all outfield hits into the water were singles. The Buccos swept the double header. Capacity: 16,000 Dimensions: Left Field: 400 feet Center Field: 450 feet Right Field: 400 feet Exposition Park was noted for its twin spires behind homeplate on the roof of the grandstand. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad came to own the site. It was used briefly by the Federal League in 1914-1915, but thereafter, it was abandoned and gradually disappeared. By the mid-'20s, the railyard had grown to cover pretty much all of what had been the ballpark. A special thanks to Denis Repp (splinter@usaor.net) for his contribution to the sections on Exposition Park and Recreation Park. Denis sent me a follow-up note of interest. At the end of the inaugural 1883 season at Expo II, the American Association Allegheny ball club and the landlord of the exhibition grounds, the Exhibition Society, squabbled over $250 in rent, countered by a $3,000 threatened lawsuit for fence/grounds repairs as well as extra police security to protect two openings the Exhibition Society left in the Grounds (fencing I assume). On opening day, the Exhibition Society (allegedly) took control of the entrance gates from the ball club, and doubled the normal 25 cent admission and turned away those who showed up with just a quarter. The ball club and the landlord also bickered over control of various gates, with the landlord eventually declaring the lease "null and void" and claiming the club "couldn't lease the ground for any amount of money." The squabble was overcome by events when the Exposition Grounds buildings were destroyed by fire in the off season. The Alleghenys were offered a new park near the modern-day Strip District, but club ended up at Recreation Park for the 1884 season. (Source: Pittsburgh Post, 1883) July 10, 2012

The lead changed hands six times. The Minutemen outhit the Amish 12-10 but left 11 men on base. Reggie Jackson (HOF) bombed his 25th home run of the year off Bruce Sutter (HER) to give Delaware Valley the lead in the top of the ninth. Joel Johnston (1993 PIT) ended up blowing just his third save of the season when Greg Gross led off the last of the ninth with a pinch-hit single, and Spencer came off the bench to crank #17 on the year for him to win the game. Vic Wertz (1950 DET) and Butch Wynegar (1977 MIN) also homered for the Amish. Wynegar turned in a 3 for 3 effort to raise his batting average to .211. I decided that today's games I was just going to post the box score so you could see who was in the lineup and some stats so far. Game 1 was a NO-HITTER!!! Harry Coveleski beaned Harry Lumley in the first and his only walk came in the eighth I believe. He has won six consecutive starts for the Coal Miners. This was his sixth complete game and first shutout. You can see the box score at the bottom of this page at the strat fan forum. www.stratfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89045&page=25&p=1251907#post1251907
